How to allow students to retake a module w/o taking the quiz

Mar 16, 2014

I created separate projects in storyline to be able to load as separate modules in my current Litmos "class setup". Each project contains 10-20 slides with content and audio recordings the students follow. The last instructional slide is then followed by a series of quiz slides and a results slide. My students are finding that once they complete the project (module in Litmos), they would like the ability to go back and "retake" the module. That is possible but the score resets and it forces them to go through the quiz slides again. They find that workflow very frustrating and I certainly appreciate that.

I have contemplated separating into two separate projects, one for instruction slides and the second for the quiz. Seems like a this should be a common scenario.

Are there options that will allow the students to take project in "review mode"  w/o going through the quizz?. Is that a function of the LMS or can it be done in Storyline?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Francis.

Hi Francisco,

Most LMSs consider a course to be in review mode after the tracking requirement has been met. In review mode, resume data is no longer sent to the LMS, which prevents learners from accidentally changing their course status from complete back to incomplete. Have you checked with Litmos to see if this is something that they could set up for you?

Within Storyline, you could "force" it a bit if you don't have the resume prompt enabled for your course and always force users to resume where they left off. If that's the case, I would suggest on your results slide to remove any trace of previous buttons or navigation back into the course and include the "review" button which would take the user back into the quiz to review. You could also set up a trigger to jump back to the beginning of the course, and you'll just want to be sure all quiz slides are set to "resume saved state" so that the user can't change the answers or mess up the score.

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for your reply. I posted the question to Litmos support. What I know is that once a module (scorm) project is marked Complete, the only choice you have to view the slides again is to "restart" or cancel. If I choose to "restart", the module is set to "in progress" again and you need to complete all the slides and retake the quiz.  I am not sure I follow well your suggestion on what to do inside of Storyline but I will try to play with the "resume saved state"

If you have any examples, perhaps it can get me started. In any case, I will wait also to see what Litmos support has to say.

Thanks

Francis.

Hi Francisco,

If Litmos won't allow you to view a course in a review mode, I'm not certain how the "resume" behavior of your Storyline course will behave, although if all the slides are set to "resume saved state" as described here for the individual slide properties.  You'll also want to look at the Resume behavior for the entire course as described here in the player properties.

Hope that helps get you started and please feel free to let us know if there is anything else we can assist with.

Thanks. I confirmed with Litmos and they don't support the module in "review mode". It is somewhere in the roadmap. It would seem that once the student completes the course and passes, I would have no way to other than restart fresh in Litmos. I may have to create a separate module that contains just the instructional slides and not the quizzes. I'll try a few of your suggestions to see if I can make it work.

Thanks for your help.
