How to create video that can be resumed from the last time when someone exit the course.

Jul 28, 2023

For example, my video is 10 minutes long, but when someone closes the learning window at the 6th minute, I want the video to resume from the 6th minute when the person starts the course again. Please share the process in detail. If you are adding triggers, then please share the screenshot. If you can also refer to any tutorial or YouTube link, it will be very kind of you. Thanks in advance.

Hello Preesh!

Thank you for sharing your file! It looks like you have an embedded video on the slide and I'm assuming that you'd like the embedded video to pick up in the same spot when the user revisits that slide. Embedded videos, different from imported mp4 videos, can't be controlled by the timeline in Storyline 360 so it is tricky for the Storyline to know where to resume the video.

I'm hoping someone in the community has a workaround that would help you resume an embedded video! If you're looking to import an mp4, let me know and I'll be happy to help!

Also the video I have added in the slide is not Embedded one, this mp4 video added from the content library 360. I have used the "Resume save status" under slide setting and "prompt to resume option" under player setting. Still it is not resuming. Am I making any mistake.
Please guide me. Thank you very much for your kind support and guidance.

Hi Preetesh!

I'm happy to help with the video that you've added from the Content Library! I created something similar in Storyline 360 and found that adding a "Save" button did the trick for me. I've created a quick tutorial explaining how I created it and tested it. Here's the tutorial link.

Please let me know if you have any follow up questions!

Hi I'm having a similar issue, I have put a Save button as you suggested and set set the trigger to Pause the video and then closed out of the module ( testing on Scorm cloud), when I reopen, it resumes on the slide however the video plays from the beginning and hasn't picked up where the video was paused. The video is an imported video, slide is set to resume saved state. Should I be using a different trigger then pause? I don't want it to go to another slide?

Thanks Tanya

Hi Tanya, and welcome to the E-Learning Heroes Community! Glad you're here! 🥳

Thanks so much for reaching out! Sorry to hear you're running into a snag.

Would it be possible to share a copy of your .story file with us in this thread or privately in a support case. I'd like to take a closer look at your setup on my end.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hi Tanya,

Good call opening a support case! I see that you're working with my colleague Jan. You're in great hands!

I'll be sure to share our conversation in this thread so that they're in the loop on what you've shared with me. We'll continue the conversation over in your support case.

Have a great day!

I am struggling through this situation and am looking for some help.  I've uploaded a video from a file into my project and followed the instructions provided by Lauren Connelly (I think) but am still not getting the results I'd like.

When I click on the "exit and save my progress button" and subsequently go back to the video, I'm taking back considerably further then the point that I exited - no matter at what point in the video I click the "exit and save my progress button.  Initially I thought it was working, but it is not.

Please see attached screenshots for the settings I have for the triggers.

I'm just looking for some help/advice.

Thank you.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Happy to help!

It looks like you have everything set up properly based on the screenshots that you shared to allow your video to resume at the correct position.

Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so we can take a closer look at why the video is not resuming correctly? We'll delete it when we're done testing!

Hi Lauren!  I definitely am looking for a solution to resume playback of a video that's imported (Insert > Video > Video from file...). My use case is strikingly similar to the OP, where I've got a 10 minute video on a slide (amongst other slides of differing types of content). If the user is interrupted on the video slide (e.g. at the 6 minute mark), I want the video to resume where they left off.

Currently I have the Slide properties set to: When revisiting: Resume saved state

...and the Player Properties > Other set to: Resume on restart > Always resume.

Yet my video still restarts at 00:00 when I come back to the video slide.  Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  I've attached a couple screen shots that illustrate the settings.  I created a short "test" project to use while testing settings & troubleshooting behavior.  THANKS!!

Hi Bill,

Happy to chime in!

It is important for a learner to interact and navigate away from the slide for Lauren's workaround to properly work. You mentioned that this didn't work for your learners when they were interrupted when viewing the slide, can I ask how did you test this on your end?

  • Were your learners given a chance to interact with the slide before the interruption?
  • Or was the interruption abrupt, causing the course window to immediately close?

Additionally, please share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so we can take a look at how it is configured. This will help us check if the slide with video is properly setup to resume right where learners are left off. We'll delete it when we're done testing!
