How to reset slide number in Articulate Storyline ?

Jun 05, 2015

Hi, try to reset the slide numbre (ex: 1.4, 1.17, 1.5, 1.78, 1.14, 1.6) in the menu Player / reset from story but won't work. Can it be done by the software ?

Thanks

Hi, Alexandre - Could you please clarify what you are trying to achieve? If you are trying to reset it from the Story, there is a Menu Reset Button in the player. But this will reset it to match up to how it is laid out in Story view. If you moved the titles within the menu, and are trying to keep it in that order, but simply rename the titles, then Jerson is right; you would have to add in their own numbers.

I am asking a similar question on another thread and not coming up with any kind of response. I am not sure the problem is being understood. Could you please review my question also as I have gone into great detail trying to explain it. It is NOT just a case of switching auto numbering off in the player. The player is displaying the menu in the same sequence as your frames were created, not in the sequence that the course is being run. It is NOT satisfactory to be told to manually re-organise the player, as you may preview and publish many many times during construction and should not need to re-organise the menu manually each time. Please review my question here also. https://community.articulate.com/discussions/articulate-storyline/the-sequence-of-frames-as-they-show-in-both-sotry-view-and-the-player

Hi Christie. I just discovered last week how to export my course to word. Since my slide aren't in correct ordrer (ex: because I copy paste some slide), I not able to print it to way it is lay out in my module. Try to reset it but they don't change the ordrer. Finally,  I manually change them and I will change my approach next time. Still, I find it strange that I wasn't able to change the order by the software.

Hi, Christine and Alexandre -- Thank you so much for you input. As Ashley mentioned in the other similar thread, it may be useful to review this tutorial on Customizing the Menu. Otherwise, we are unable to share information in regards to our product road map, future features, or timelines, so unfortunately I don't have additional information to share. You're welcome to share your thoughts on what you'd like to see in the form of a feature request as those go directly to our product development team.

Walt, you say "In the player, choose menu, and click on reset from story. Make it the last action before you publish, and the menu order will be the same as the play order, and it involves three (3) clicks, fewer than publishing."

That is NOT happening in my brand new version of storyline 2. The auto menu shows the scenes as they were created, not as they are finally re-arranged in the "play order".

I know how to customise the menu. I know how to "reset from story". So those are not the instructions I need. I need to know how to get both preview and publish menus to reflect my the sequence of scenes as they have ended up in my course and not the order in which the were created.

And following on from what Alexandre has mentioned, I decided to see if the same is happening with when I export my text for translation (which is a good way of exporting text for purposes other than translation). It is. My scene 18, which I have inserted between scene 6 and scene 7, is extracted as scene 18, not as the new scene 7 - which is its position in the "play order".

You can experiment with this yourself. Create three scenes with a few slides in each. Leave them in the order you created them in, 1, 2, 3. Publish and you can, if you want, get an automenu which shows them in sequence. Now change the order of the scenes to 1, 3, 2 in Story View. then publish. The scenes, on my system, are still showing in the automenu as 1, 2, 3, not as 1, 3, 2.

I've copied this across from another thread. This is what I think Alexandre was asking. Question answered by Phil Mayor.

It's blindingly simple once you know how. Maybe there are easier ways than I have documented below, but this is how I have made it work.

  1. Highlight the SCENE you want to move.
  2. Ctrl x to cut. You will see the original SCENE number go to "0" as it disappears.
  3. Highlight the SCENE below which you want to insert it.
  4. Ctrl y to paste. The SCENE and all subsequent SCENES will now be renumbered but it will be "orphaned" and so appear at the top of story view, but with the new number.
  5. There are two ways of re-attaching to make it display in the correct place in STORY VIEW. Either:
    • Highlight the preceding SCENE to see the link icon in the bottom right corner. Select "Link to scene", OR
    • In the preceding slide, select "Jump to [the number of the next slide]".

In the preceding slide, setting the "Jump to next slide" from within the slide does not re-attach it or display it in the correct place in STORY view.

Now the following will default to the correct order:

  • Story View
  • Preview menu
  • Publish menu
  • Export for translation.

Hello all,

Somehow, I believe that the solutions provided here do not satisfy everyone's query. I have a problem where I've rearranged the order a slide, including the triggers for the next and previous buttons. Somehow, the numbering was not modified and kept the original order (please see slide 1.5 in the image below).

Is there anything that can be done for the numbering to reflect the final (desired) order of slides.

Thank you

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Lucio,

The slide numbering does remain as based on how the slides were created. You can look at using the "reset from story" method on the menu to allow that to reset the menu based on what you have set up - but again you can also disable the slide numbers from appearing within the menu and then they'll only be visible to your in story view?

Lucio P

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for the reply. No matter how well prepared the front-end is, there are always unpredictable factors that require us to make adjustments during development. The automatic numbering of slides is useless if it doesn't adjust itself according to the sequence of presentation (what other reason could there be to number slides?). Particularly since that numbering can be used in the Table of Contents with no additional work. Having to number slides manually can be time-consuming when numerous slides are present. Add to that the above reality when a slide needs to be added to the flock in mid development, and all subsequent slides need to be re-numbered!!

Not only should the auto-numbering adjust itself to the sequence of slides (within a scene), but it should also be customizable. Or, if this is not an option, it should be completely removable.

... unless I'm missing something? :)

Hi Lucio,

You can remove the slide number from slides in the menu, and that's the place where individual users would see them. They won't see it on the story view or slide view as you're seeing. This is covered in the tutorial on how to modify and customize the player menu:

Slide numbering has been an ongoing topic here in the ELH Community - but it's generally considered to be something individual look at customizing on the slides themselves based on variables or static text boxes, since Storyline has the ability to have non-linear course access.

Lucio,

I understand what you are saying, but perhaps I can lessen some of your pain. You said "Add to that the above reality when a slide needs to be added to the flock in mid development, and all subsequent slides need to be re-numbered!!"

Notice in the video that there is no logical path between slides 5 and 8. Using click and Shift-click to select multiple slides I have renumbered them by moving them under the appropriate slide. I realize you will consider this as just an example proving that we need us use "work-arounds", but it may save you some time renumbering "all subsequent slides."

WARNING: You should try this only AFTER saving your file. Making mistakes here can change the flow of your entire file, and SL's undo ability is limited.

Hi Walt,

Sorry, just noticed your reply (should have received an email but didn't!). Anyway, thank you for the suggestion. Of course it works and I don't even considered it a work-around, but an appropriate procedure!

Actually, it's my bad! I realized that I found myself in that situation because instead of physically changing the position of the slide first (using your correct procedure), I modified the navigation triggers (next and previous) instead. Doing that, successfully changed the position of the slide in Story View, but didn't renumber it. To do so, I had to resort to a "work-around" consisting in creating a temporary scene, moving the slide to be renumbered into it, then moving it back in its desired sequence.

I kind of feel silly to have brought all this up in the first place and should have investigated a little further. I sincerely hope that I didn't appear to be too hard on Ashley. Her contribution to this community is greatly appreciated!

Thanks again!!

Hi All,

Can someone please help me sort out my slide numbering, I have reset player and nothing.

From slide 1.6 drag and drop, it is supposed to jump to scene two, but it takes me back to the video which is slide 1.7. I am trying to re arrange the sequence and it just doesn't work.

I have included here the screen shot
