If a user does not pass a quiz in a Storyline 2 course, is there an easy way to automatically direct them back to the learning portion of that course?
I know that I can limit the amount of times a user can retake a quiz from the Results slide. However, after the user fails three times, how do I automatically direct them back?
Hi there Lori! If the user fails 3 times, do you want them to go back to the very first slide in the course? If so, you can just insert a button on the failure layer with a trigger that brings them to the first slide. Is that what you're trying to achieve? Be sure to pop back in and let me know if this will work for you!
Here is the explanation we are using for the Course Instructions:
If you elect to take the Assessment first and do not get a passing score of 90% or higher, you will have the opportunity to repeat the quiz up to three (3) times. If you do not pass on the third attempt you will automatically be sent back to the learning portion of the course.
Yes, thanks so much. First thing you'll want to do is ensure that you have set up your quiz attempt limit using an Attempts variable as explained in this tutorial.
Next, add a "Restart Course" button to the results slide that becomes enabled only when the Attempts variable is equal to the maximum number of retries that you want to allow.
If you would like some assistance setting this up and you’re able to share your file here in the forums, you can include it by utilizing the ‘Add Attachment’ button at the bottom of the reply window. I'd be happy to help. :)
I do have one more question. I need the assessment (quiz) to reset once the learner has taken the learning portion. Right now, if the learner fails 3 times, they click a restart course button which takes them to the beginning. When they have completed the steps, they can then retake the assessment and hopefully pass. My initial thoughts were to create a new scene which holds another version of the assessment, but that would make the file too cumbersome. Any suggestions?
Hi Lori! Sounds like you may actually need to adjust your attempts to allow for more than 3, right? The variables you just set up will drive the user to either Retry or Review the lessons, but you are allowing them to continue taking the course it sounds like.
I don't think so...when you go back to take the assessment after you retake the course, it's showing the answers from your last attempt. Does that make sense? It seems to me that I should just be able to tell Storyline to reset the quiz, but I'm not sure how. Maybe another variable?
Here's how I have it set up...the learner has an option to go through a Show Me How video, Let Me Try Steps or to take an Assessment if they feel they already know everything. However, if they do not pass the assessment after three tries, I want them to take the course from the beginning. I have attached the .story file. I am still in the fleshing out of the assessment questions because this is a review/refresher of an instructor-led course that is much more intensive.
Now I have another dilemma. (One day I will be as good as you guys.)
I have this assessment (see attached .story) where the user is allowed to take it three times, but after the third time they will need to restart the course from the beginning. I have a button that’s titled, “This is your last attempt!” I have it set to Hidden until the third try, and then I have it set to Normal.
Everything works great with all variables up to this point. However, I would like this button to go back to being hidden once the user fails the third attempt. This is where it fails. Any suggestions would be a great help!
The attached .story is only of the assessment. I stripped the rest out due to it being rather large.
Oh my goodness! Such a simple fix. Move it off the button, place it in the result slide trigger list instead. I have been pulling my hair out for a week or so trying to figure this out. Thank you so much! It worked beautifully!
I am back with an even bigger conundrum and I apologize upfront for the length of the explanation. The pieces that I cannot get to work are bolded and italicized. Here is how the attached assessment is supposed to work:
Scenario 1:
User passes test on first attempt.
Scenario 2:
User fails first attempt and the Retry Quiz button displays
User passes second attempt and the Retry Quiz button is hidden (The "This is your last attempt! text box" displays. It should not)
Scenario 3:
User fails first attempt and Retry Quiz button displays
User fails second attempt and then the "This is your last attempt!" text box displays along with the Retry Quiz button
User passes third attempt and the "This is your last attempt!" text box and Retry Quiz button is hidden. (The Restart Course button is displaying and should not)
Scenario 4:This works great!
User fails first attempt and the Retry Quiz button displays
User fails second attempt and the "This is your last attempt!" text box and Retry Quiz button displays
User fails third attempt and the "This is your last attempt!" text box and the Retry Quiz button is hidden. The Restart Course button displays.
In order to test this, you would need the correct answers to the four questions:

Excellent! Let me implement this and I will let you know how it goes.
Thanks Alyssa, your advice worked beautifully! I love this community.
Thanks for popping back in with an update, Lori! I'm so glad it worked for you. And I completely agree - this community is unlike any other!

Is that because you are then in 'Review' mode because they have no further attempts? Do you have a .story file that we could take a look at?

Hey Lori! A few more triggers on the result slide to control what happens/resets based on that 'restart' course button.
Check out your updated file.
I downloaded and unzipped. Am I missing something? There isn't any .story file.
I've attached a .story file?
Could you try to utilize a different browser?
That's what it was! IE seems to be a problem. However, it's kind of what we're stuck with here at work. Firefox seems to work better. Thanks!
The changes you made are perfect. I made note of this in my checklist for future reference. Thanks for all your help!
No problem Lori - glad to be able to assist.

Hi Lori
made a few changes to your triggers on the result slide - hope this helps
