We work with an insurance agency and they produced SCORM content. They sent me their zip files, but I can't upload them into my LMS with a message stating that the file type is not allowed. I'm trying to determine if the issue is with my LMS or the zip file. Any suggestions.

I would try to upload the zip file to SCORM Cloud and verify that it is a valid SCORM package.
