Integrating modules and quizes in an LMS

Dec 05, 2022

Hi, I've got my modules and their quizes in Litmos (uploaded as separate LMS-published ZIP files) and can review them, and I want the quizzes to be passed before the learner can move on to the next module. I don't see guidance for this in the discussions, so maybe it's just too obvious to document!! Here are my questions.

  • Regarding the requirement of passing the quiz before starting the next module, do I set that up in Storyline3 or in Litmos, my LMS?
  • How to make sure that when each one of my modules (and their quiz) are completed, the course automatically flows to the next module?
  • Is the Exit Course trigger used only for the end of the whole course, or should it also be used at the end of each module/quiz?

Thanks!

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for reaching out!

Linking multiple courses in an LMS isn't something we support right now since this would most likely require specific LMS configurations to achieve. With that being said, have you considered consolidating your modules and quizzes into one project to have more control over when a learner gets to move succeeding modules?

By having all of your modules and quizzes in one project, you can use condition triggers to control the navigation, as well as restrict movement and progress in your course until quizzes have been successfully passed.

If you prefer to keep your modules and quizzes as separate LMS files, I'll leave your inquiry to the community to see if any of them have encountered a requirement similar to your so they can share how they were able to address it.

Thanks Joe. A couple of followup questions:

You mentioned linking multiple courses in an LMS, but my modules, which are separate .story files in SL3, are all part of the same course, like successive chapters. But with quizzes in between and a final exam.  Are you using the term 'course' and 'module' interchangeably? And 'project' is the same as 'story' file?

I suppose I could put all the slides and quizzes in one story file, but it would be huge and it would make updating sections of it more time consuming.

If I do stay with my current approach of uploading my modules as separate projects to Litmos, would I need to use LMS features to advance from module to its quiz, and have the LMS manage proceeding to the next module, conditional on passing the quiz?

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks Walt. I'm using Litmos, and I've not been able to locate a detailed user guide with instructions on how to orchestrate that. Although Litmos seems to bring up the modules with the 'next module' button, be it an instructional module or a quiz, and that's working ok, I still need to learn how to do the tracking of quiz results and conditionally moving on to the next module. Maybe I do that in SL? I'll check that out. Thanks again.
