Interactions on the IPad

Jan 14, 2014

I’m hoping there are some folks in the community who can provide some insight into overcoming the issues with interactions on an IPad.

Our firm has created 30 plus Storyline modules.  They generally play beautifully on regular computers.  Each of these modules is approximately 60 screens with about 5 to 7 interactions.

When viewed on the IPad the narration audio and the animation don’t sync.  The audio completely plays first and then the animations begin.  There are several buttons and triggers in each interaction.  In every instance, the audio and animations don’t sync.

As is these interactions are unusable on the IPad.

We understand that the Safari browser has limitations, so we use Chrome.  And, needless to say, the modules are published with the HTML5 option.

Our clients have asked us to prepare to roll out these modules to a few thousand mobile users.   We’ve suggested the potential to use the Articulate mobile app, but the clients want to avoid additional layers of technology.

We’ve submitted a case to “support” about this and received a canned response to visit a particular Articulate webpage.  It was a waste of time and effort for both parties.

So, my question is, are there ways to help make these interactions work?

Can they be modified or simplified?  I heard we should try to test the interactions.  But, right now we wouldn’t know what to modify to test them.  The trial and error iterations could go on for who knows how long.

Do you have any thoughts on how interactions function properly on the IPad?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Allen,

I see the case you're referring to, that you're working with with Jayem (# 00378380 for my reference) and I see that Jayem did let you know about some of the inherent limitations with mobile Safari. He did not mention though that when viewing html5 content on the iPad, we currently only support viewing it in Mobile Safari in Apple iOS 5.0 or later on iPad or the mobile player as the output is more consistent there than other browsers.

If you haven't already, you may want to review this comparison chart that details features of Storyline and how they'll behave in the Flash, HTML5 or Mobile player output.

I'm not sure what type of interactions you've set up, but if you're able to share one here or even a sample or description of the behavior you'd like, the community and staff can take a look and offer suggestions regarding use on the iPad, other ways to set it up, etc.

Additionally you're also welcome to share your file with Jayem who can do some additional testing of how it behaves within the iPad.

Ashley,

Thanks for your reply.

I sent files to Jayem previously.  I got the sense from his reply that he didn't do any evaluation of the files and just sent the canned response.  I sent him a follow-up email posing some questions, and never received a reply.  So much for "support".

Your comparison chart shows that Chrome should work for HTML5 published files and that's what we've been using.  And, our interactions don't contain Interactive Elements, Trigger Actions, or Trigger Timings that have a yellow box around them.

The iOS is updated to 7.

We've assembled a file that contains examples of the typical interactions we use.  I'd be willing to share it with the community and staff.  How do I do that?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Allen,

Chrome does work with HTML5 content, but not on the iPad. That chart details web browsers as a whole, but the viewing requirements here indicate the piece about viewing on the iPad.

I suspect that Jayem's response was based on your mention of the scrolling panel not working, and therefore he shared information about a known behavior that you need to scroll with two fingers.

If you'd like to post your file here for us to take a look at, you'll want to use the paperclip icon at the top of the reply box: . Please let us know if there are specific slides, elements that you'd like us to take a look at.

Ashley,

We've assembled a Storyline module that contains examples of the interactions that are not playing properly.  These interactions play beautifully on a typical desktop or notebook.

Each interaction has an intro screen.  Then, buttons are pressed to display additional content.  When a button is pressed, the audio begins and plays to completion.  Then, the visual elements enter the screen.  The audio and visual elements should be synced together - meaning the narration announces the appearance of the visual elements.   And, they are synced on a regular computer.

I've attached the .story file and the published file.  The interactions where these issues occur are screens 3, 6, 9, 11, 15, and 18.

We would appreciate your evaluation of the interactions and insights into how this could be resolved.

I've tried three times now to paperclip the files to this post.  Each time I get the Server Error - 404 - File or Directory Not Found.

I've received a really poor response from your "support", and now your basic upload functionality is lacking.  Would there be an easy way to do this?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Allen,

I'm sorry that you weren't able to upload the files here, but it may be that the file is too large or you're encountering some security restrictions on your end to upload it.

A few other ways you could send it to us include replying to your original case and attaching the file (if you choose this method let me know so that I can go check on your original case), you could start a new case and have it assigned directly to me by adding the following syntax to the start of the description:

::ashley::

Or, if you are able to share the .story file through a public Dropbox link or even WeTransfer.com link you can share that here in the forums or by sending it to me in a private message.

Let me know which way you go and then we'll be able to take a look at your file.
