Issue with multiple audio tracks and layers

Feb 13, 2017

Hello everyone,

I need your kind assistance on a issue I'm having with layers.

Basically, I have a course. Each slide contains multiple layers with multiple audio tracks. I need more tracks because I'm using a TTS software and I need to create long pauses to sync the videos and the pictures shown.

I also need students to be able to reset the layers so they can hear the explanation once again, so I checked "Reset to initial state".

Unfortunately, by doing this, Storyline only plays the first audio tracks and stop the other ones for... I don't know what reason.

Is there a solution for this problem?
Thank you.

Hmm, that's definitely odd. Just to double check, is this file saved to your local hard drive? Are you seeing this behavior in Preview mode, or after you've published the project and uploaded it to it's intended environment?

If you're not able to share your file in this discussion, you also have the option to share it privately with our Support Engineers here

Here is what I mean.
Base Layer has 1 button to show Layer 1.

Layer 1 contains two audio tracks: "track one" (pause) "track two"
Both of these tracks are stored on my hard drive.

If you click on the button and revisit the layer, you will notice the voice will just say "track one" but not "track two".

This issue occurs in a brand-new project so I think I may be messing something here.

Thank you.

Hey Teresa,

Thanks for sharing your file, and you're not missing anything! This is actually an HTML5-related issue. I published your file to Articulate Review with Flash Only and HTML5 Only so you can see the difference between the two. The Flash version works great, but the HTML5 version omits the second audio file. You're also seeing this happen in Preview mode because Storyline 360 preview displays the HTML5 content.

I'll definitely pass this along to our Quality Assurance team, and as soon as we get more information from them, I'll update this thread. In the meantime, I'd recommend that you combine the audio files into one continuous file:

  • Export the second audio file, and save it to your local drive.
  • Select the first audio file, then click Audio Editor.
  • Click import, and select the second audio file from your local drive.
  • Click Save and Close.

Another option is to publish the file to Flash Only, if you don't need the HTML5 version.

Hi Alyssa,

Thank you for your reply!
Correct me if I'm wrong here: in order to make the layers with multiple audio tracks, I need to publish the course with a format: Flash Only, right?
What is the difference between HTML5/Flash and Flash Only?

Also, does the method to combine tracks work with three or more audio tracks or just with two?

@Rex Mor: I unticked that option, but the issue is still there (at least in preview version). Thank you anyway. :)

EDIT: About combining audio tracks, I think it won't work with my case as I need to create very long pauses with tracks playing on specific moments. I think that would require me too much work that I unfortunately don't have.

Hi Rex Mor and thanks for your file! :)

It works, but I need to create very long pauses and work with many audio tracks like, 13-15 at a time.

I need a fast way to manage this problem and for now, the fastest I see is to simply publish the course in Flash Only (unless there are some significant cons by doing so).

Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Hi Teresa,

This might be a bug issue in Storyline.
I don't understand why it won't play more than 2 audios in a layer for the second time.
That's why I come up adding a long pause just to tell the Storyline that there are more audio  available on the layer.

I will find another workaround and I will update it here once I have a solution.

Hi Teresa and Rex!

Yes, this is a bug with Storyline 360 in which revisiting/reloading a layer causes only the first audio track to replay when you view the content with HTML5. We're tackling this issue with the team, and we'll definitely let you know when we know more.

This table compares the feature of Storyline 360 that are supported in Flash and HTML5. You'll want to include HTML5 in your publishing options if there's a chance your learners will view the course on a mobile device. Here's the lowdown on each of the publishing options and how they'll affect your course:

  • HTML5 Only: The course will show HTML5 content, meaning your learners will see the bug.
  • HTML5/Flash: The course will default to the HTML5 output in supported browsers, and your learners will see the bug.
  • Flash/HTML5: The course will default to the Flash output, but it will show the HTML5 output if your learners use a mobile device.
  • Flash Only: The course will show the Flash content, meaning your learners will not see the bug, but the course will not work on mobile devices.

If your learners will use desktop computers, you should be safe publishing with Flash Only, or Flash/HTML5 if there's a chance they'll use mobile devices. Here is a list of desktop browsers that support Flash content:

Windows: Internet Explorer 8 or later, Microsoft Edge (latest version), Google Chrome (latest version), Firefox (latest version)

Mac: Safari (latest version), Google Chrome (latest version), Firefox (latest version)

Hopefully that clarifies the differences in publishing options, and let me know if you have any further questions!

Hi Teresa,

Good news! We fixed the issue you reported where:

  • Revisiting/reloading the same slide or revisiting a layer causes the audio not to play

Install the latest Storyline 360 update to take advantage of all the recent features and fixes. Here's how.

If the problem happens again, please record a Peek 360 screencast for me, and I'll be happy to help!
