it happened again!! I can't believe it!

Feb 06, 2013

Hi All,

I've spent over 100 hours learning SL and trying all sorts of things. I'd say that 60% to 70% of that time was in learning mode.  Anyway, I finished everything but the final test.

I was working on it and I lost all my graphics!!  I still have the content added by SL, but all my images are gone.  My slides are blank pages with captions.  The story view panel shows all the pics. But when I click on them they are not visible.  You can see what I mean in the attachment.

This is the second time this has happened. The good news I save regularly.  The bad news is that I don't rename the file each time I save it.  So my last saved file is the one that is blank.

I am totally disheartend.  I will have to recreate it again.  Nobody could fix it last time.

ARRRRGGGGGHHHHHH (as Charlie Brown used to say)

Thanks Leslie,

The good news is that I'm getting pretty fast at this thing   The bad news is that I keep futzing with the program, adding stuff, refining images, etc.  That adds time... and makes it even more frustrating when it all disappears... POOF!

Here's what I'm doing so I won't be so disheartend the next time (yes, I think it will happen again. I don't know why I think that but twice is more than a coincidence).  I do a little work and save the file as xxxx_1.story and xxx.story.  Let's say I'm working on xxx. I'll work for about 10 minutes and save it as xxx and xxx_1.  Now, I'm working on xxx_1.  I work for about 10 minutes and save it as xxx_1 and xxx.  I just repeat this process every 10 minutes or so.

My thinking is that it's easier to do this and only have to recreate 10 minutes of work than to keep saving the file and then have to redo 3 days worth of work.

Hey, Dave, Tom... you guys should build a save process like this into the program to save us poor souls from agony and frustation.

Just an idea.

Oh, no:( Sorry to hear that Alan. I recommend using something like Dropbox for worked files. I've been using it for over a year (paid for the upgrade at $99 / year) and IT IS A LIFESAVER. I have access to my files no matter where I am and my development machines are all synchronized. I can also invite other collaborators.

The best part... it automatically saves versions of every save. So if I muck something up (not me... never:P) then all I need to do is go onto the dropbox site and roll-back the file to a previous version. And all is well
