Major Audio Editing Issues in Storyline 3

Dec 23, 2020

I have been having audio editing issues for about a year now so I'm throwing in the towel and hoping someone can help so I don't have to do all these time-consuming workarounds.

Background: Issue began in December 2019. I work only on my local drive. I've uninstalled and reinstalled SL 3 three times with no improvements (last time tried was 12/18/20).

Problems:

1. When I edit the audio and hit save SL crashes. It doesn't happen every time, but often enough to be bothersome.

2. After I edit and save, when I preview the file is blank with just a flat line for the audio. But at least it saves it so I have to close down and reboot to listen to the file.

3. After I edit, when previewed no audio plays at all but I can see that the audio is there (not the flat line like in #2). My workaround has been to export the file and re-import it, then it works fine.

Thanks for ANY help you can provide. Happy New Year!

Reading your description, my only thought is how much time you could save by editing in a stand-alone audio editor, and importing a final version audio file. Besides all the problems you describe, even when it works well, SL's ability to edit audio is still much slower than using an outside program, and inserting.

I suggest Audacity; free, easy to use, way more flexible and exact. Open SL, Open Audacity, edit, save, and insert.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. Granted, still hope there's a solution in SL but good to know I have options. Regards - Blythe

Thanks for the details of what you are experiencing, Blythe.

I see that you opened a support case on this same topic with our team back in May and based on your frustration shared here as well as your mention of a 3rd attempt to get help when you reached out in May, I'd like to gather some additional information so that we can help you.

  • Is this an error that you are able to consistently reproduce? If so, is it specific to an audio file?
  • Did you use another email or contact when you worked on these audio issues with our team previously? I was only able to track down a single support case and would like to connect the dots and escalate to one of our senior technical support engineers.

If you'd rather chat about this privately, please feel free to reach out here.

Finally, your email signature came through when you replied via email above. You can remove that if needed by clicking ‘Edit’ beneath your response. Here’s a quick Peek video if you need help.

Leslie,
Thank you for reaching out. Back in May I just gave up and then didn't have to work in Storyline for a while. But now I'm back to working in it regularly so I would love to resolve this.

These issues happen in every SL file I'm in, it's not exclusive.

I should also add that I try to regularly keep ample space on my local drive as I've noticed that when it's more full, SL doesn't perform as well.

Thanks for your help

Hi Blythe,

Have you also checked what update of Storyline you're on? I'd want to have you test out a brand new file while using Storyline 3, build 3.11.23355.0 as that's the latest.  You can check which version you're using by going to the "Help" Tab -> "About Articulate Storyline".

After that, I'd want to reopen your support case so that our team can reach out and work with you one on one as it sounds like there is something within your setup that's interfering with Storyline. We can help you track that down and make any adjustments.
