JAWS screen reader + Text boxes containing hyperlinks, issue

Oct 23, 2015

I was just testing my course for accessibility using JAWS and I noticed that the hyperlinks embedded within a text box don't work. If I use a mouse, I can open the link, but JAWS doesn't see the link at all.

I'm wondering if anyone knows why this is happening and if there's a fix. Thanks in advance!

Hi Christie - Thanks for sending the other post. I have looked at the post and a few others, and it seems that JAWS won't read hyperlinks within a text box.. the only work-around is to add a URL to the text box directly. I was hoping there was something else as some of my text boxes have as many as 5 hyperlinks - the work-around limits me to just 1 link. Thanks for the help though!

Hey Laurie!

It sounds like you've got hyperlinked text inside of a textbox, and you're not able to tab to that hyperlink. I'd suggest adding a transparent shape or button on top of the hyperlink. Then, add the hyperlink to the transparent shape itself, and not the text in the larger textbox. That way, you'll be able to tab to the shape itself and easily open the hyperlink.

Give it a try, and let me know if you'd like some help with that!
