Launching an application through Storyline?

Jan 27, 2014

I can't seem to launch a program through Storyline.   (I realize the web based publishing won't work because you can't run an executable through a web browser).  I have asked for help from Articulate storyline, but really didn't get much of an answer.

I'd like to be able to launch our CAD simulation software from a hyperlink inside the storyline player.  I'm using the Jump to URL/File and pointing at the simulator program that normally launches correctly.  When I try to run it through Articulate, it either gives an error message "This page can't be displayed" or "Windows can not find qtcore4.dll file."

Any ideas on how we can open our application through the articulate storyline player?

Hi there Brian and welcome to the community!

I do agree with the response Justin sent in your support case -

"Storyline won't stop you from inserting a hyperlink to a locally-stored executable file, but most Internet browsers will not allow such a file to be launched. Imagine, for example, if Google Chrome allowed websites to access and launch files on your local computer--it would be a malware free-for-all!"

I'm just curious - do you need to publish this for the web? If not, have you tried publishing for CD instead? If the application is one that could be included with the CD output, you could direct the link to that directory and run the .EXE file for the Storyline project. Again, though, I'm not entirely sure the launch will allow that application to run.

Hopefully others with success launching an application through their published projects will be able to chime in and give you some additional suggestions :)

Thanks!

That's correct.

I am getting the error message when trying to publish through the CD process.  I already knew about the limitation when viewing through a web browser.  I just don't know why Articulate can't seem to open an application when running the articulate player on a Desktop computer.  I always get an error message -- I was hoping someone might know a workaround.

It would be really helpful to teach the lesson through articulate player -- then to be able to load a specific model/part for each lesson within our CAD simulator.   I suppose we could record a video and just play it at the end of the learning module, but we really want the student to get the experience within our simulation software.

Hi there Brian,

I really like the idea of creating the recording - you could always use the step-by-step option to make sure that learners actually work their way through the real software, even if they aren't launching it in its true "live" state.

Another suggestion - I would recommend posting over in our Building Better Courses section as well. It's possible that some of our community members have had some luck with this and might be able to help. I'm not sure if JavaScript or some other coding might help, but the pros here should be able to chime in and let you know whether or not it's possible to do this with some extra workarounds or tips.

Best of luck with the project, Brian. Please let me know if you're able to find an option that works for you.

Have a great day!

Christine
