Layer not appearing halfway through the slide

Jun 13, 2014

I have a menu layer that has a hover border so that it appears on click and hides when you move off of it. It is on each of the slides. About halfway through each of my slides, it will not appear when I click on the link. Is there a limit to how many times a layer will appear?

Hi there!

Sorry for jumping in, but I took a quick look at your file and I think I may see the problem.

Along with many other triggers on your "Menu" layer, there's a trigger that closes the layer when the timeline ends. It may not be necessary to include this and it may be contributing to the issue.

If you're just clicking and hovering off of the layer quickly to test it, it'll take you a while to get to the 5 seconds you currently have for the timeline of that layer, so it's not noticeable until later when you've accessed it a few times.

I'm uploading a modified version of your project file, just in case you want to take a look and see how it functions without that trigger.

Let us know if you have any trouble with this, or any questions!

Thank you Christine and Rebecca. That is a more elegant solution than I found. I lengthened the timeline of the menu layer to match the timeline of the main layer.

Christine, your comment about the timeline leads me to another question. Do the timelines of all of the layers on a slide run concurrently or independently? If the timeline for the main layer is 30 seconds long and the menu layer timeline is 5 seconds long,  will I be able to access the menu layer after viewing the main layer for 25 seconds?

Thank you again to both of you for your help.

Hi Stacey,

The fun answer: A little bit of both :)

It really depends on whether or not you're pausing the main layer - but that doesn't impact the timeline of the main layer it only stops it while another layer is open. They are independent in that they are not tied together.

If you view 25 seconds of the base layer, or even the full 30 seconds, then open a new layer that has 5 seconds, that layer will still have its own timeline. You can even enable seeking on the layer if you want to see the timeline active for that specific layer.

Let me know if this is just confusing babble, or if you have any other questions :)

Thanks!

That makes sense, Christine. Let me see if I understand it. Each layer's timeline is independent. A layer will stay visible even after the timeline stops, unless you do something to close it. And every time you click on a layer (unless you've paused it previously and if you have it return to it's initial state) the timeline starts again.

So in the case of the menu, the timeline only has to be 5 second long. Is that correct?

Almost - the layer isn't getting reset. That's why it was closing after 5 seconds of accumulated time on hover in your original project.

The hover off is hiding the layer, but that isn't resetting the time. This is because of the revisiting settings.

You can certainly change this setting for the layer to "Reset to initial state" and that will open the layer with the same amount on the timeline, every time it's opened.

If it's set to Resume, and sometimes Automatic, it will start where it left off. So, when the time runs out (no matter how many times you hide the layer), that's the end of the timeline. If you reset it, it will open and play for the amount of time that's set until you close it. Any other time you open it, it will play for that time until closed.

I hope that helps :)
