Layers and video triggers

Aug 03, 2014

Hi,

I have been running into trouble with trying to loop videos within 2nd layer built on base layer. In this example, the base layer has clip ...no logo. The 2nd layer has ...slo mo video. Looping no problem for base layer video clip ...no logo. However, when attempting to loop 2nd layer video ...slo mo, not able to find within media options, despite pasting video to 2nd layer!.

please help.

I'm not sure I understand completely what you are trying to do but if you are trying to Play a video on layer 2 after the video on layer 1 completes then I think all you have to do is have a trigger on layer 1 that says show layer 2 when the video on layer one completes and then have the video on layer 2 set to run automatically when the timeline starts.

Thanks for reply. Actually have a button trigger on base layer that takes user to 2nd layer. In 2nd layer, another video should play. In my pic i show two different video files. The file under OBJECT does not show inder MEDIA.

if i could find a way to have 2nd layer video recognized as media file for trigger, i could fix problem. Not sure if this clarifies my issue.

Hi Gerry,

I'm also having a hard time following this set up, but since it seems to be working to play the media from the base layer while on the second layer, I'm guessing you've set it so that the base layer objects are not hidden while on the layer itself? If the user is going back to the base layer to watch the first video, but would need to click the button to access the 2nd layer, I'm unsure where you'd like to place the trigger for the 2nd layer media element? Could you maybe share that one slide with us so that we could take a look at what you've set up and if you could include some additional directions of what you'd like to set up that would be helpful.

ashley,

your assessment is right. i do use a button trigger on first layer to show the 2nd layer. The trigger i am trying to place is on the 2nd layer video titled ...slo mo. what i was trying to show in the inserted image above was that the media clip title does not match the object video clip title. in fact articulate does not recognize the 2nd video titled ...slo mo when trying to select it within Media while in 2nd layer. i will try to upload more images of steps i have followed.

thanks.

Hi Gerry,

If you're able to share more images or even a copy of the .story file (just these few slides/layers even) I think that'll help us take a look at what's happening. It's also worth checking if this is occurring in just this file and trying to import the project into a new file as described here.

You'll also want to make sure that you're following along with these guidelines on working on your Storyline files:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive).Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, includingfile corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory pathto your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters(for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents orsymbols in your file names.

Ashley,

i've saved and attached the slide within the scene that i am having trouble with. please notice that there are two different video files: one on base layer and another on 2nd layer. again, unable to recognize/select 2nd video under trigger option for 2nd layer.

i hope this helps.

thanks

Hi Gerry,

This must be getting frustrating for you, because I too am confused. But, I'm tryin'! So, here's what I see:

BASE LAYER

Video name: Video 1: and in the timeline the name is SLAX v 1 no logo.mp4

You have a trigger that loops the video by playing it when it completes

SLO MO LAYER

I see a video named Video 1: and in the timeline the name is SLAX v1slo mo.mp4

So, the timeline name is different, which makes me think it's a different video

But, in the trigger layer, the trigger currently says (before I made the below change) to play media Video1 SLAX v1 nologo.mp4...which is the Slide 1 video...the one that has "nologo" in the file name. And you want the other video to play on the layer.

So, I'm creating a trigger and selecting the SLAX v1 slomo.mp4 video from the drop-down:

I don't know what I'm looking at (except I'm guessing it's a heart ), and it looks the same to me, but it does now have the different video names in the Slo mo layer.

Please let us know if that helps ;(

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for sharing the file, and I took a look and took a look at Rebecca's example. The difference it looks is that it looks like you had clicked on the video placeholder to add the trigger, instead of just adding a new trigger to play the media based on when the other media completes. That's the only difference I could see at least in terms of how they were added...

Let us know if you're still having difficulty or if we're misunderstanding!

Rebecca

for some reason your pic shows that ...slo mo.mp4 is available to select within MEDIA option in Trigger. However, when I open on my end I do not see it as an option - only ...no logo.mp4. Slo mo is only visible under OBJECT option.

If i leave MEDIA blank in 2nd layer and select slo mo.mp4 in OBJECT video loops as desired in 2nd layer.

I will try to fix on other slides, but seems a suboptimal solution.

thanks

HI Gerry,

I'm not sure if you posted this after Ashley replied. Her assessment that I created a new trigger, as I showed in my screen shot above, is correct. I'm not sure why you're not seeing that on your end. The screen shot was taken from your file.

I've taken a couple more screen shots and combined them here

So, you can see on the left that the Object drop-down is showing the LAYER Slo mo. And on the right, you can see that when the drop-down is closed, it simply says, "Object: Slo mo."

Does that help?

Gerry Rodriguez

sorry for belated response, rebecca.

Still having the same problems I've tried to describe above. Your screenshot do not show any MEDIA selected. I find that this is where glitch is occurring. I can select desired video clip under 2nd layer OBJECT but not under MEDIA.

I've just about given up on it.

thanks for your time.

PREVIEW PLAYER

Another question I have but cannot figure out how to post as message (embarrassing and exasperating!) is:

How do I enlarge preview slide within preview player view? See attached photo. I other screenshot samples I have seen, displays looked maxed in size. I have a large display that I cannot maximize during PREVIEW review.

Ashley Terwilliger-Pollard

Hi Gerry,

In Rebecca's screenshot above, the "object" is the media which is playing and therefore selected. The difference is when creating the trigger from scratch instead of while clicked on an object or element the trigger set up is a bit different and it looks like when Rebecca created the sample of your project.

In regards to your overall preview display, it looks like your monitor is quite large based on the size of the other icons - and there isn't a way to change the overall size of the preview display. How the final product will display once completed is based on the story size you set and the player/browser settings you choose here.

Hope that helps with your set up!
