Limiting quiz attempts without using a results slide

Mar 10, 2014

Hi,

I want to let users repeat a drag n drop quiz 3 times, but I want to achieve this without using a results slide and the "retry" button that is built into such slides.

My thought was that I could set this in the quiz editor by simply selecting "3" from the "scoring attempts".  My thought was that on the first 2 attempts the submit button would show the "try again" layer, which would jump the user back to the quiz.  And on the third incorrect attempt it would show the "incorrect" layer (obviously, if the user gets it right during any attempt, it would show the "correct" layer).  But this doesn't seem to be working.  If the answer is incorrect, it just keeps going to the "try again" layer, and never goes to the "incorrect" layer.  This goes on as though the scoring attempts are set to "unlimited".

Any help would be great.

Many thanks,

Aaron

Hi Aaron,

Have you added anything else to your slide or layers, such as track by a variable that is maybe getting reset? Also, you mentioned "jump back to the quiz" from the try again layer - are you using the built in "hide layer" trigger associated with the continue button or did you customize something a bit further? It may help if you're able to share your Storyline file (or even a sample you've created with the same behavior) here with us so that we can take a look at what you've got set up.

Hi Aaron,

Thanks for sharing the file here with us. I see that you're using a "jump to slide" trigger on your try again layer so that all the drag elements will reset. That is also resetting the slide as a whole and therefore the attempt count. You'll need to set this up to also track a variable on how many times the user has taken the quiz question. I'd recommend adding the variable to the try again layer when the user clicks the "try again" button, and just make sure it's before the jump to slide trigger.

I'm not sure which Screenr you're referring to, but if you need any help while you're working on it please let us know.
