Linking object triggers to a video

Jan 25, 2024

Hello everyone,

I have a video on a storyline slide. Buttons appear synchronously with the video content. This works perfectly as long as the user lets the video run. If the user presses pause, the buttons appear too early respectively the video appears too late. I had to link the triggers for the appearance of the buttons to the timeline because I couldn't find a way to link to the video.

Does anyone know a way to create a trigger that sets the state of an object from hidden to normal when the video reaches 20 seconds, for example? I have attached a sample file. Maybe I have overlooked something or someone has had the same problem and has a solution?

Many thanks in advance!
Greetings

Hi Natalija!

It sounds like you are trying to use a video's timeline to trigger the state of an object. Happy to share some insight on this!

Currently, that type of functionality does not exist in Storyline. A video timeline and a slide timeline are two separate entities. Pausing a video's timeline does not affect the timeline of everything else on the slide.

To work around this, I first disabled the video controls for the video.

I then enabled the Play/Pause option within Player Controls.

This will keep all elements in sync when a learner pauses the main timeline.

I've attached a revised copy of your .story file for your reference. Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi Steven,

thank you so much for your answer and the file! We work without Storyline player, because we embed the storyline block in a rise course. But we need the captions, so switching off the video controls is no solution unfortunatley.

Do you plan a possibility in future to set triggers on media or to synchronize video and timeline?
