LMS doesn't extract data from quizzes or surveys embedded in SCORM

Apr 18, 2013

I've just found out that our LMS does not extract data from quizzes or surveys embedded in SCORM. I created a video module in Storyline and added a simple Likert survey slide and a survey results slide after the video slide. I set a trigger on the results slide to submit survey results when the user clicks SUBMIT and then published it to SCORM with the tracking set to "Result slide to report" to the results slide I created.

Next, in our LMS I created a module within a course and uploaded the SCORM package to the module. The SCORM plays fine and the LMS is able to report that the module was completed, but I can't report on the survey results. Is this common amongst LMS providers to not extract quiz/survey data from SCORM? If so, I'm not sure why Articulate has the function to allow one to create a quiz/survey in Storyline and publish it with the LMS setting if most LMS service providers don't let you extract the results.

The workaround is to create a separate module within the LMS for the quiz/survey. It's a viable option, but I'm still curious why quiz/survey creation is a function of Storyline's LMS publishing feature. Thanks.

Hi Mark, welcome to the community!

Which LMS are you using? Not all LMS are able to report on survey results.

Would you mind testing your course in SCORM Cloud to help us determine if the issue is Articulate-related or if it's on your LMS's side? If it appears in SCORM Cloud as well, we'd be happy to take a closer look at what might be going on. If you can't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, it's probably an issue that you'd want to take to your LMS team.

The articles here and here may also help clear up common LMS issues.

Thanks, Mark

Our LMS service provider told me their system is not set up to extract the survey results from the SCORM package. For propriety reasons, I can't upload the video module to SCORM Cloud, but if you think there is a workaround within Storyline's SCORM capabilities, than I can make a mock test with a generic video and survey. Thanks.

Hi Mark,

Unfortunately, if your LMS isn't set up to pull survey results from the SCO, I'm afraid I wouldn't be of much help coming up with a workaround.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you shared the data that we do send to LMSs, in the hopes that maybe your LMS can implement something going forward.

Best of luck, Mark.
