LMS only reports passed/failed

Jan 19, 2024

The LMS that is most commonly used in my industry gives us completion data and nothing else. I need additional data that can be tracked in SCORM, but the LMS provider has told me that while they could occasionally pull a report for me, they can't get me that data for every course we offer (since it's a manual process for them). Changing LMS providers is off the table. They did say they would consider adding this feature in the future, but I need this data now. Beyond writing xapi statements and sending that data through to an LRS, is there any other way to get that data on my own when a course is launched through that LMS?

Disclaimer: I know enough about LMSs to know that most LMS admins are highly underpaid for their work, and enough to leave the room when others in my org start asking for assistance with performing LMS admin work. (-;

If you are tied to publishing in SCORM, then I would suggest you publish to SCORM 2004 (not 1.2). I have learned that 2004 offers a good deal more "data exportability" (for lack of a better term) and allows question-level data to be reported.

As in our case, I have encouraged the LMS team to work closely with the vendor to enable those type of data to be much more easily accessible. But unfortunately, most of those suggestions/requests/pleas have largely been ignored.

I would like to see exactly what you are describing: the additional data that users generate during a course.

Maybe we should all just enroll in an xAPI academy.

If your LMS provider cannot provide it there is very little you can do, changing the scorm format will give the same issue.

If you have access to an LRS you could send info there, or to a Google sheet.

Have you asked if your Company would be prepared to pay the LMS company to build a report front end so you could then request your report?

Thank you, Phil - that was what I thought!

Is there a way to send SCORM data to an LRS or Google Sheet without xAPI statements, when the course is launched from an external LMS?

Right now, we are thinking about investing time in xAPI and an LRS (if another solution cannot be found). It's possible my company would do what you've sugggested, depending on the cost. Right now the LMS company says that is not one of their current enhancement goals.
