Loading Videos - Best Practices

Apr 27, 2023

Curious to see if anyone knows how videos are pre-loaded on a slide. Currently I'm setting up slides where users will have a menu of different video options, and each selection will open up a dialog layer with a video on it to watch. I've noticed an uptick in support tickets with videos taking awhile to load and I'm not sure if it's the way I'm setting up the slide.

Wondering if it would make a difference if instead, each menu item pointed the user to a lightbox slide (or just another slide) with the video on it.

With my current method, I'm not sure if Storyline is pre-loading all the videos in the layers at once causing a slowdown.  Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hello Evan,

Thanks for reaching out!

We have this article which how content in a Storyline 360 course is preloaded:

Additionally, you can check out this article if you're concerned about the videos in your course taking too long to load for your learners:

Layers are preloaded along with the slide, so if you have multiple media heavy layers on your slides that can be lightboxed instead, this might be worth testing out to see if it improves the overall performance of your course.
