Losing LMS Progress on iPad (html5)

Jun 09, 2014

Hi, I have built a course with a custom menu placed on an initial slide, I'm not using the Storyline player menu.

The custom menu uses variables to trigger progress objects on the menu and save values when written away to the LMS. The course is set to always prompt to resume when the learner returns and not use Flash Cookies. If I access and reaccess the course on PC, and Windows tablet (both running flash) the custom menu is always correct on return, i.e. it remembers the previous progress/variable settings.

However if I access the same course via an iPad (Mobile safari) i.e. html5, it is remembering  different settings for the variables. So it is not calling back the last saved state from the LMS.

I have seen in old threads (re: version 2 and 3) that html5 (iPads) was having issues with resuming progress for audio. Is what I'm seeing all part of the same thing or is this something different.

Hi Trevor,

I'm unsure about how you've set it up to retrieve variables from the LMS - although I suspect there is some Javascript installed, which I wouldn't be able to assist with. In the meantime, there is a known issue mentioned here regarding the resume behavior not working correctly when you've exited the course on the iPad. Do you have a quiz that you're tracking in your Storyline file, or just sending these variables to your LMS?

Hi Ashley.

I suspect the known issue is the root cause of the issue, it reads that way. I don't suppose you have an rough idea when the next release will be?

I'm assuming and tell me if mine wrong, that in Storyline if a variable is set to a value and that course is then saved to the LMS then  that variable value is also saved in some way and is pulled back when the course is resumed. I'm not myself adding additional Javascript. The course design is working fine in flash but if viewed in HTML5 it appears to be writing variable values away to a local cookie instead of to the LMS.  This gets very confessing if the learner is viewing the same course on their PC and iPad as the resume status is jumping to a previous (but not the last) status.

Hi Trevor,

Unfortunately we don't announce release dates for new versions or updates, so the best thing to do is subscribe to our Word of Mouth Blog here or enable the Check for updates at startup feature to be notified when the new update is available.

Ah, thanks for confirming the part about the variables. I read it as you were calling a variable from an external source - sorry to have confused you. Yes, that is how it should be working, which I believe is a part of the issue documented.   Does the same behavior occur if you just view it on your iPad? Or is it only when switching from PC to iPad?
