Make seekbar continuously functional across slide layers

Mar 29, 2013

In Storyline, I need to make the seekbar continuously functional across all of the layers of a slide. My problem is that each layer restarts the seekbar from the initial position. After I display the next layer in sequence, I can't scrub back to the previous layers.

How do I do this?

You could use a slider bar to mimic the behavior of the built in seek bar over several slide layers. However you would have to add a lot of triggers to make this work and the base layer would need to be view-able all of the time so that it didn't disappear when it was in use. I'd imagine you could make it more detailed in it's scrolling ability with cue points across the slide layers. But triggers would need to be added to tell the slide bar to go to a specific location for each section in a slide layer you wanted to jump to. And if you ever decided to edit the length you would have to rework the triggers and cue positions. Not fun.

So it is possible, just far from practical in relation to how exactly the seek bar works. But may be worth doing if it's functionality doesn't have to be as detailed as a seek bar.

Hi Stefan!

It sounds like you want layers to appear at various time intervals on your slide, is that right?

As long as you haven't enabled the "pause timeline of base layer" setting, the player seekbar will always reflect the timeline of the base layer. It will not start over when each layer opens.

For now, the best way to achieve what you're looking to do is to place everything on the base layer. That way, learners can scrub backward and forward on the timeline, and the slide objects will appear and disappear accordingly.

Hi,

Wondering if there has been any change to this feature in the past two years?  What is written, above, does not make sense as you say that the seekbar will always reflect the timeline of the base layer, yet in the next paragraph you suggest placing everything on the base layer.  Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using slide layers?

Hello Sarah!

I'm happy to clarify! The seekbar reflects the timeline of the base layer. We've released multiple enhancements within the past two years, including the conditional seekbar.

The seekbar will show the timeline of the base layer so if you're using additional slide layers the timeline will continue to advance. If you don't want that to happen, then I'd recommend checking the "Pause Timeline on Base Layer" box in the Slide Properties.
