Making Changes to Hidden Layer

I'm developing education using a template created by a previous course developer who is no longer in our organization. This is a very complex template and I've been able to take it apart so I can modify it. There is one part that I cannot get to. In the attached file, slide 1 is the original showing all the layers. The 2nd slide is stripped of the layers that I can access. I'm able to make changes to all of the items on the remaining slide layer called "ladder" except for one part. I'm wanting to change the text under the ladder rungs, e.g. hands off help, etc. but can't figure out how to get to that text. Can you help?

Toward the bottom of the timeline. there are two items that cover the text. One is Ladder, and the other Mask. Turn them invisible. Then click just above the text, and you should see selected a small empty text box. (They are named 1 Count, 2 Count, etc.) The text you want to edit is in the states of those text boxes.
Oh my. I knew it was going to "obvious" in the end. I was looking for that but didn't realize I had to make those two invisible. Who would have thought? I am convinced more than ever that the brain behind this slide is a very intelligent one. It's been fun taking his work apart. My learning curve continues. Thanks so much for your very quick and helpful response!
Would you be able to unravel another mystery for me? What is the significance of the "dot" in the base layer? And what is the "hidden" state" all about?
I don't see anything obvious. I would start by making it invisible in the timeline, and running the slide to see what function disappears.
