Math in Storyline (BEDMAS)

Apr 22, 2021

Hi there,

Trying something new in Storyline and conceptually it sounds easy but I'm having difficult wrapping my head around how to accomplish it.

Here's the situation:

Our organization has defined some criteria for achieving a competency and there are tasks to complete. For example,

  • Being a super users earns you 2 points for every hour spent as a super user.
  • Self-directed learning earns you 2 points for every 100 pages read.
  • Completing an examination earns you 25 points per every exam complete.

I'm envisioning a setup where the user can enter the amount of time, pages read,  and number of exams complete and have storyline do the math. For example, 25 points * 2 exams complete = 50 points; 2 points * 2 hours spent as a super user = 4 points; and now cumulatively the person has 54 points.

I've played around with the variables only I'd like this to be a bit more user friendly. I wouldn't want each calculation to have a designated calculate button.

Hi, David, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ✨

Thank you for reaching out and explaining what you are trying to do!

You can use one button to do all the different calculations, just make sure they're in the right order, as it's essential when using triggers on the same object.

Here is a screenshot of the triggers I would use in your scenario:

I am attaching an example .story file that does the calculation you need. You might have to make some changes, depending on if partial points are given.

Let me know if this works!
