Motion Paths not working as expected with "User presses a key" trigger in Storyline 360

Nov 26, 2016

Hello everyone, I have been working with the Motion paths in Storyline 360.

When I tried to trigger the animation with "user presses a key" animations doesn't work as expected. Following are my observations:

  1. Triggering animation using "User presses a key" trigger, animation doesn't work in both preview and publish
  2. Animation starts working after clicking on the object to which the trigger is attached
  3. When I press and hold the key, animation keeps on restarting without playing completely even once (This behavior was not there in Storyline 2)
  4. When I attach "Orient Shape to the path" property to my path, and do the same by pressing and holding the key, animation keeps restarting and the object starts changing its direction very rapidly causing a rotation effect
  5. Sometimes, triggers used inside layers to start animation are not working even after clicking on the object (This issue is appearing very rarely in publish)

I've planned to develop a cool interactive game using the new motion path animations and triggers in storyline 360, but I'm unable to accomplish it as I was facing these problems.

I've attached the source file and publish for your reference.

Please help me out if there is a way to overcome these problems.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Godwin, thanks for your patience! This one had me stumped as well - I had to reach out for additional help, and I learned something new in the process! There's only one small change you need to make to your triggers for it to work properly:

Change your selection in the "Object" field to the slide itself instead of the image.

I have made those changes and republished the file here so you can test it out. Let me know if this was the solution you were looking for!

Hi Alyssa,

Thanks alot for your efforts. Your suggestion was really helpful to solve the issues on long pressing the key.

Unfortunately I'm still seeing few issues I've addressed earlier. The object is not moving on the path by pressing the key, unless I click on the object or on the stage.

I've tested this in Storyline 2 it seems to be working fine over there, without requiring the user to click on the stage. As storyline 2 dons't have Object Orientation feature I need to develop my interaction in storyline 360. These issues are mostly appearing in HTML 5 Version. Can you help me out with this issue too?

I've attached the update source and publish for your reference.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Godwin,

Thanks for that update. You are correct - it works as expected when published with Flash but doesn't work when published with HTML5. I have reported this issue to our Quality Assurance team, and although I cannot provide a timeframe for a solution, I'll be sure to post updates here in this thread as they become available.

Hi Owen,

Thanks for the sample file - it's something we have reported to our team for Storyline 360, so it would be present in Storyline 3 as well. I'll include your files as a part of our testing.

Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed quickly, while others take longer to resolve. Here's more information on how we identify and tackle bugs.

I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update on this issue. Thanks so much again for letting us know about this, and I’m sorry if it’s slowing you down.

Hey everyone,

Good news! We fixed the issue you reported where keypress functionality and triggered motion paths did not work when the focus was on the slide or object when viewing the HTML5 output.

Install the latest Storyline 360 update to take advantage of all the recent features and fixes. Here's how.

If the problem happens again, please record a Peek 360 screencast for me, and I'll be happy to help!
