Multiple Times and Results Slides

Sep 05, 2015

I've been assigned to create a large 60-minute pre-assessment module with 5 question banks. Ideally, the client would like each section to have its own Timer and Results slides. However, when I tried this in a small "proof-of-concept" file, the Timer would just stop at the first Results screen and never restart for the next section of questions. (The first Results slide was set to Start Time at First Question and the other Results slides were set to Start Timer at First Slide).

When I changed the Timer setting for all sections from "Start at First Question" the Timer would NOT stop when I reached the first Results screen. It would appear to restart when advancing to the next section, but it was actually applying the first section's time limit to the ensuing sections, and the quiz timed out before I could finish (because the first section's time ran out). I tried breaking out each section into its own Scene, but that didn't help either. I saw this issue at http://www.articulate.com/support/storyline/timer-keeps-running-on-the-result-slide-or-stops-running-when-retaking-a-quiz, but the only solutions was to update Storyline, and I have the latest version. QUESTION 1: Is there a way to have separate Timers for different Assessments within the same Storyline file?

QUESTION 2: An alternate solution might be to have ONE Results slide and ONE Timer for the entire Assessment (The time limit is 60 minutes). However, would the timer "pause" if the user exited the module and then returned later to finish it?

Hi Debbie,

Are you using Storyline 1 or Storyline 2? The article you linked to was for Storyline 1, but there is an open issue with our QA team currently in regards to the quiz timer appearing on all questions/results slides regardless of only being enabled on one section. Currently the workaround is to do as you mentioned - disable the timer entirely or set it to allow for enough time for the entire course.  I'll include this thread in the report filed with our QA team so that I can provide any updates here once they are available.

If you enable the timer on a result slide in Articulate Storyline, you may find that the timer resets or starts over in the following scenario:

  1. You start taking the quiz and exit the course before completing it.
  2. You resume the course and continue with the quiz.

This is a known issue. Currently, there's no workaround so that wouldn't solve the second question you asked about.

Thank you, Ashley. Fortunately the client was satisfied with:

  • One Timer for the entire Assessment, and
  • Section Break slides I inserted that indicated X of Y questions they got correct in the section, and A of B they had completed so far in total assessment, and
  • Final results slide with percentage correct and total time.

HI Amy,

Do you only have one results slide? You should be able to use the built in "reset results" functionality when the user is going to click on the "retry/retake" button and allow them to go back through the course. That should reset the questions and the timer. I do know of an issue where if you have more than one results slide, and are compiling them all into a final results slide, that does not allow it to be tracked and reset so as a workaround you'd want disable the built-in quiz timer and use a custom timer using Variables and Triggers. Here's a forum thread where users who achieved something similar shared their work.
