Thanks for the confirmation. I suspected that it wasn't possible.
My immediate need was solved by adding a couple of variables, and selecting either checkbox would set them to true. Then used some triggers on timeline start of layer 2 and 3 to switch to layers 4 and 5 depending on which combination of checkboxes were selected.
It doesn't feel like the best way to do it, but it worked.
Glad you got the help you needed here - "best way" in Storyline is all relative I feel. With more time in the forums you'll see there is typically a ton of ways to accomplish the same thing, and it's all about personal preference.
