New accessible features - Tabbing through player feature

Feb 25, 2021

Hi all, I was just wondering how I can get a user who is using a keyboard to tab straight to the next/previous buttons on the player.

With the new update and with everything activated on the player, my users are having to cycle through everything (Pause, seek bar, replay, volume, closed captions, accessibility controls) before they can get to the navigation.

Is there a way for me to have the navigation first followed by the rest? It's becoming quite a tedious process to go to the next slide.

Video example attached.

Hello Toni!

Great question! We don't currently offer a way to customize the Focus Order of the Player. However, I can see where that would be useful.

I'm happy to share this with our team in the form of a feature request! I'll keep you posted in this discussion when I have an update to share. Thanks for sharing how this feature is beneficial in your courses!

Hi Lauren,

Thank you. Before the update, it would tab to the navigational buttons first and then to the rest of the player features. The new storyline update included features to improve accessibility but now it seems to have hindered it. I'm not really sure that this is a feature request as it was something that worked before that has now been removed or perhaps not thought out very well. Making a non-mouse user tab through all of the features before they can get to the next slide seems counter-intuitive.

Hi Lauren, do you have any updates? This new change to the tabbing order in the player is quite frustrating for keyboard users. Before the update, the player tabbed to the next and previous buttons first, and then cycled through the seekbar/volume/captions/resources/menu etc. I'm not sure why it was reversed after the latest update!

Hi Toni,

I'm sorry to hear you have some frustration with the new accessible features, and I'd like to give some insight as to why we did this:

While the previous right-to-left sequence gave learners quick access to the Next button, it wasn't a typical web experience for keyboard users. Now learners know what to expect, even if they've never taken a Storyline 360 course before.

To help your users navigate to the next button more quickly, I’d suggest using the shortcut below and other keyboard shortcuts we added. These are super beneficial for everyone:

  • Next slide: Ctrl+Alt+. (period)
