Occassional problem with progress and quiz result not updating

Nov 07, 2013

Hi,

Most of the time the course in question progresses as expected, when users exit and return they are in the correct position and the results of the quiz are communicated to the LMS (Moodle).  Occasionally we get a report that the user has completed the course with a score of x and have closed the SCO down with the 'Finish button', but the score is not updated in the LMS and the user is only shown to be a few slides through.  Does the progress only get communicated to the LMS at the time that the course is exited?  If so failure of the internet connection at this time could explain this. Has anyone else had experience of this/have a solution.  Any advice will be gratefully received!

Hi Stephanie:

This is usually because the LMS session data capacity has been exceeded by the amount of data Storyline is positng to it.

SCORM 1.2 allows for 64,000 bytes of cmi data to be sent and stored, where as SCORM 2004 2nd Edition and below are much less than that.

Point being... Try to publish your course as SCORM 1.2 to see if that corrects the issue of cmi_session_data overflow.

Here is a nice link describing this issue and a Moodle hack that may help: https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=232736

Hi Dennis thanks so much for the info and apologies for the delay in replying.

I currently use SCORM 1.2 and i think the problem was caused by the user having an unreliable internet connection as I haven't seen this again since.

I will be hosting some courses in SCORM cloud with the option of using SCORM 1.2 or 2004, so I will definitely take the data limits into consideration with this.

Again, many thanks, Stephanie
