extract vimeo (or whatever) player url from its embed code and use that as the web object
The first option seems a bit clunky given that, in Slide View, it's fairly trivial to paste in the embed code from vimeo (this is possibly a feature request???).
The second option I only just got around to testing and actually seems to work quite well! Though not very obvious.

There does seem to be an option to insert a Web Object Placeholder on the menu while editing the Slide Master
