I've built a quiz-based module that includes a randomly drawn bank of questions. All navigation is handled by in-slide buttons - no need for PREV and NEXT - yet these buttons still appear on quiz slides that have been previously answered. I.e the learner can nav back and forward through the questions, and they strangely see the PREV and NEXT buttons only on those they've answered, not on those they've skipped.
Testing is being done in our LMS, ie in the environment it'll be used in.
Have found a couple of other posts re PREV and NEXT appearing when they shouldn't, but not anything that addresses/resolves exactly this.
I've now managed to convince the client to let us run the quiz in a different way which means this is no longer an issue. Am going to test Steve's method anyway to see what it's like in the flesh and have it on call for any future requirement.

Steve has an answer below, you can either set the slide to reset to initial state or see if Steves solution works
