Previous vs Last

Oct 23, 2019

In Captivate, there are 3 (or more) different triggers for navigation backward:

  • Previous slide
  • Last slide visited
  • Jump to a specific slide

With Articulate, it seems that Previous goes to the last visited slide.

In a sequential design this would not be an issue since slides are played one after another in the order they are created. Things get a bit erratic if you have a star design, one can be in a loop very quickly.

Is there a way to set the default "jump to previous" goes to the slide directly prior, in the design, rather than the last visited slide?

Hello Thierry,

You are correct. The default behavior of the Previous button is similar to a browser back button. This way if the learner is jumping around in the content, the previous button takes them back to the last slide visited.

You can adjust the trigger to jump to a specific slide if needed.

We are currently tracking a feature request that would allow the author to determine the logic for the Previous Slide trigger. I've added this conversation to the report.

The problem I see is that if you jump to a slide using the menu, you would expect the Previous trigger to go back to the previous slide using the chronological order. The Next button always follows that order.

For 5 slides, it's manageable, but for 30, 40 or 50 slides, it's getting tedious to manually wire the Previous triggers to specific slides because a single menu action can break the entire navigation.
