Articulate Studio and Articulate Storyline are software packages that are used to create the courses (including quiz questions) that you would host on a Learning Management System (LMS). Both these software packages produce courses that are SCORM or Tin Can compliant. SCORM and Tin Can are industry standards that are used by LMS systems to track user test scores and/or course completion. If you want to see some examples of what Articulate Storyline and Studio can do, take a look at the Articulate Community Showcase and the Product Showcases.

Articulate also has a hosted service called Articulate Online which you can use to host your courses and track how users are interacting with them. Articulate does not call this a learning management system but it does some of the same things a learning management system would do. Pricing for this service starts at $199 per month and goes up depending on the number of users you have accessing the service.

I have not worked with it much but if you purchase either Articulate Studio or Storyline to develop your courses it is really simple to publish the courses to Articulate Online.

Now to confuse you - There are literally hundreds of different LMS systems on the market and some of them have functionality that allows you to create basic courses and testing (courses are rudimentary for the most part and do not hold a candle to what Articulate can do).  The pricing for these LMS systems is also all over the map. Some are proprietary systems and extremely expensive and others such as Moodle are  open source and free.

Your best bet is to make a list of all your requirements including budget for initial outlay and ongoing operation costs and them compare these to the LMS systems out there.

Here is a link to a site that lists (what they say are the top 20 LMS systems)

Hi Roma and welcome to Heroes!

As Nancy mentioned, Storyline is designed primarily as an elearning development tool to be used in conjunction with Articulate Online or your own Learning Management System (LMS).

For the best results and most accurate reporting, we recommend using Articulate Online:

You can sign up for a 30-day free trial of Articulate Online here:

http://www.articulate.com/freetrial

If you don't want to use Articulate Online, any LMS that is compliant with SCORM, AICC, or Tin Can API will also provide accurate tracking capabilities. Here are some open-source LMS options that may meet your tracking needs:

*  Dokeos:  http://campus.dokeos.com/

*  eFront:  http://www.efrontlearning.net/open-source

*  Moodle:  http://moodle.org/

Click here to learn more about publishing for Tin Can API:

Tracking results in a text file or database is not supported. If you'd like to track your Storyline content without an LMS, we recommend reviewing some threads in the community forums for ideas on how to set this up.
