Problems with Font for Text Entry field

Jul 29, 2016

Hi team

I'm trying to make a simulation of one of our workplace systems. One of the slides requires text entry. I'm trying to match the font used in the actual system, so I click on the Text Entry object and adjust the font, size and colour. However if I return to the object later, it always seems to have gone back to the default Arial 21.5.

I can't quite put my finger on what is causing it to trigger back to the default - sometimes just clicking outside of the Text Entry object and then clicking back on it again causes it to change... other times it seems to stick until I click inside the Text Entry object causing the text cursor to appear, at which point it defaults back to Arial 21.5.

As a secondary problem, even when it does seem to stick, when I preview the slide the text that I enter appears truncated vertically with scroll bars introduced.

I feel like I must be doing something wrong, but can't see it. I've attached a .story with the one problematic slide. The settings I'm trying to make stick are Courier New, size 12, colour yellow.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Attached is your .story file. I have made some changes with the Text Entry object as per your requirement. Hope your problem will solved.

Thanks- Abhishek

Hi Abhishek

Thanks for replying - may I ask, what were the changes you made? Working with your file, I see that the font itself - Courier New - does seem to have stuck, but not the font size. It changes back to size 21.5 without me altering it as soon as I click within the Text Entry field.

Hey Steve,

It's nothing you are doing wrong, but rather a Storyline limitation.

Fonts are not embedded in the published output so variables (which includes text in a text entry field) will use a default system font if the requested font isn't installed on the users device.

This is a known issue.

Hi Matthew,

I'm not sure this is the same issue to be honest. The font I'm trying to change to is Courier New which is a standard font for Windows, plus I can understand why a different machine trying to 'play' the storyline file would need to change the font if that font isn't installed, but in this case I am not even changing machines.

this often happens if there is no text in the text entry field.

There are reports that update 10 for SL2 fixes this, I find if you change the font set the size and the click off the field and then lock it on the timeline normally fixes this behaviour.

You will find fonts are substituted quite frequently in references as Matthew points out.

Hi Phil

Thanks so much for the tip. Locking it immediately after setting the correct font, size and colour seems to be the winner. Yes, it certainly does seem like a bug so hopefully an update will fix it.

Thanks so much

Hi Steve,

I'd agree with Phil that you'll want to look at ensuring you're using the latest update of Storyline 2 Update 10 as it included a fix for the issue where text would be the wrong font, size, or format in data-entry fields. If you're still seeing odd behavior after updating and testing it in the update 10 of Storyline 2, we'd want to take a look at your .story file and any accompanying screenshots you could share.

Hi Ashley

Clicking 'Check for Updates' tells me that there are no updates available at this time, but when I click on 'About Articulate Storyline' it tells me I am running Update 7: 1509.1408... confused....

Hi Steve,

You could not be connected to the internet or behind a firewall that is preventing you from connecting with our site. You can go here to use the direct download link and it'll prompt you with all the install instructions.

Thanks Ashley, I installed from your link and now showing as on Update 10. I'll see how I go under this latest version and will report back here if the problem persists for me, but I'm sure it won't.

Is there somewhere on the website that I can check what the latest version is, as it appears the 'check for update' button doesn't work for me for some reason and not sure how else I'd know that my version is out of date?

Thanks for your help.

Steve

Hi Steve,

You can always see the latest version by looking on our support pages linked here and you'll see it shown as below:

As for the check for updates, did you double check that you're connected to the internet and not behind a company firewall? You can also set Storyline to automatically check for updates when you are connected to the internet as shown here.
