Project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened

Hi all,

Please help!

We are getting the following error when opening Storyline files:

"This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of Storyline."

The file was saved to our shared drive. I am unable to open it from there. I am also unable to open it after moving the file to my desktop.

Please save us from having to constantly rebuild.

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Courtney,

I'm really sorry you're running into this error! Let's try a few options and see if it helps:

  • Copy and Rename: If you save the file to your desktop, you can also try to create a copy of the file and rename it. Then try to reopen.
  • Find a temporary file: Here's how to check.
    1. Open this folder in Windows Explorer:  % appdata%\Articulate\Storyline
    2. Scan the contents of this folder for a file that starts with the name of your project. If you find one, copy it to your desktop. If you find more than one, copy the latest version to your desktop.
    3. Change the file extension of the copy on your desktop from *.tmp to *.story.
    4. Double-click the file to open it in Storyline.
  • Share the file: Share your .story file with our support team, and they can take a look and see if anything can be saved.

We always recommend saving and publishing Storyline projects on your local hard drive (typically your C: drive). Working on a network drive or an external USB drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption, or prevent you from saving changes. This article covers more.

Let us know if you're able to salvage anything!
