Putting variables into quiz slides - and getting invalid answer

Nov 10, 2017

Hi All,

I've a couple of questions I'm hoping you kind folks can help with. I'm building towards a SCORM where learners will view a video on a slide whilst evaluating the content on two separate question sheets (using radio buttons) that is on the same slide. The score that the learners assign for each question sheet would then be pulled through to two separate quiz slides (which in the live version would be hidden from learners) - the idea being that we can then populate these scores to a results slide and report on them through the LMS.

So far so good - but when I try to move past the quiz slides in the preview, I get an invalid answer message (at a different point for each of the quiz slides, as I've set the triggers slightly differently). I think this is because the user hasn't submitted the value in the quiz field (as it's been populated by the variable)? But, I'm not sure what the solution is; any suggestions much appreciated! As mentioned, these slides would be hidden from users in the live version - not sure if that would just bypass the issue completely?

I've aspects of the results slide/reporting to figure out as well, so if anything jumps out about that, suggestions also welcome :)

[I've attached the file to the post. To try the example in preview, pick some of the radio buttons in slide 1, click 'finish', then click submit. The 'finish' functions would be subsumed into the submit button in the live version.]

Excuse the messyness of the slide - the layout is an altogether different problem... and thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hi Alistair,

Thanks for including your file here! It looks like slides 1.2 and 1.3 are Graded Numerical Entry slides, but I would actually use Survey How Many slides there. This handy tutorial will guide you through the steps, and I think you'll find this one helpful, too.

Good luck, and let us know if you hit any snags along the way!

Thanks Alyssa - useful resources!

I'm aiming to keep the quiz slides as Graded Numerical Entry as there is a correct answer for each row on slide one, and it would be useful to have that data in the report to the LMS, which I believe wouldn't happen if I were to use Survey How Many (as there isn't a correct answer there)?

With the help of your links, I have found a way to get the Graded Numerical Entry slide to progress automatically, using the triggers shown in the attached screencap (and deleting the correct/incorrect slide layers, and setting slide advance to automatic).

There are a couple of problems I'm hitting though - one is that the quiz slide doesn't recognise '0'  as a valid entry (0 is coded for the 'not done'/'no' responses in slide 1). This means the user gets halted on the quiz slide with a 'you must complete the question before submitting' invalid answer pop up, rather than the slide progressing automatically. I can just bump up the numbers the slide one radio buttons correspond to by 1, but wondered if you knew of any other solution?

The other problem is that in the live example, there will be quite a few questions/rows in slide one, meaning that the user might have to sit through something like 40 auto quiz slides progressing once they submit the slide. I could cover this with a 'loading' slide as suggested in your link, but it would still take a while. Do you know if there is a way for the quiz slides to report the linked variables to the results slides without the user going through them, even automatically?

Phew - apologies for the long reply!!
