Question Bank Reset to Initial State?

Apr 10, 2015

Hi Folks,

I'm making a game-like learning module and it has a question bank that has 20 questions and the learner will be asked 10 at random. I want the learner to be able to re-play the question bank again and have another 10 random questions. However, even though I've set all of the questions to "Reset to Initial State", it picks the same questions as the first time they go through the question bank.

Is there a way to make the question bank reset so that it picks 10 new questions at random?

Hi Matt,

Thank for clarifying, but I'm still not sure if I'm following along.

It looks like you are using Storyline 360 and we had a previous issue where the question draw would show the same questions on subsequent attempts in HTML5, but this was corrected back in Update 12.

Do you know what version of Storyline you're using?

You can check by going to:
Help > About Articulate Storyline

We are currently on Build 3.30.19518.0 of Storyline 360. You can read all of the details here.

If you are running into an issue with your question bank, then with your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here. I'll delete it when I'm done troubleshooting.

Hi Leslie,

Apologies for the delay, i've been away :)

I eventually managed to get the problem resolved by doing some more research on related threads and a recommendation from another user.

I was previously getting a trainee to answer a question from the bank, they would then receive a review for their answer. After the review screen i redirected them to the bank again but when i did this they were faced with the same, already answered question;  this was the clue i had previously been overlooking that provided the answer to the problem.

I added a new trigger to reset the results before directing them back to the bank and, hurrah, they were now looking at a different question!

I am having problems with the reset to initial state slide property for quiz questions.

I have questions that are drag and drop. Learners can have 2 attempts.  For the second attempt the drag items do not return to their original position.  To overcome this, I created variables to count the number of attempts, and the try again button goes back to the same slide for the second attempt.  This way the drag items are back where they started from.

This worked fine until I put the questions into a question bank and now I cannot jump back to the same slide for the second attempt.  So I used the reset to initial state property but once again the drag items are not where they should be when the slide resets.

Is there any way that the drag items can be sent back to their original position on the second attempt?  I have attached a sample with one question that shows how the reset is not working.

Hi Kay,

Thank you for sharing your sample file!

Another idea that I hope will help is to use motion paths for the drag and drop question. Since the drag and drop question contains one draggable object, I used variables to determine which motion path should be followed when retrying the question. I am attaching an example file to my post to help show what this setup would look like.

For more details on this workflow, I wanted to share a link to the community member's post that shared the idea here:

I hope this helps, and please let us know if you have any questions!

Hi Sparkle ELearning,

This conversation is a bit dated and I'd love to understand what you are seeing. Are you not seeing new slides presented when retrying a question bank quiz?

I am currently building a course in Storyline 360 with a question bank at the end. The course is published only to HTML5. When the user fails, they must retake the quiz by clicking the "Retake Quiz" button on the "Failure" layer of the Results slide. The problem, though, is that there does not seem to be any way to reset the question bank to its original state. That is, all of the questions are pre-answered from the user's first attempt at the quiz.

How do you reset the quiz to its original freaking state?!

Hi Brandon,

Thanks for sharing those details! There are a couple of items you'll want to check for resetting quiz bank questions:

  1. Check that each question's Slide Properties are set to the default Automatically Decide when revisiting.

  2. On the Retake Quiz button, review that you also have a trigger included to Reset Results before you jump to the start.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi ! I have been reading all the posts related to this issue but still cannot find the solution. My case is similar, but there's a difference: I'm using the question bank but without any quiz (I'm trying to show random slides everytime the user gets to the question bank). Like in the cases reported by other colleagues, when I first enter the question bank I see a random slide but, when I get for the second and future times, the slide that the question bank shows is the first that I got randomly. I cannot solve this creating a new question bank because I want this to be random until the user decides to exit the course. Is there a way to solve it? Thank you!
