Question on quiz properties and results slide
Jan 30, 2019
I have client. There is a pre-quiz with 2 attempts and a results slide. The results slide must have on the Success layer 'Continue to final quiz' and 'Continue to training". The Failure layer must have 'Retry quiz' and then after the 2 attempts "retry quiz" must disappear and "redo course' must appear.
I need help please with this:
- On the questions, i have set the number of attempts, but when they click the redo quiz on the final slide, the answers from the 1st try are still there.
- I cannot get the "retry quiz" to disappear and "redo course' appear after the 2 attempts
If you do the pre-quiz and then skip to the post-quiz, you have 3 attempts on the post quiz. If you get all 3 incorrect you go to the training to do the course. On the results slide the Failure layer must have 'Retry quiz' and then after the 3 attempts "retry quiz" must disappear and "Go to course' must appear.
If you do the course and then the post-quiz you have 5 attempts.
I need help please with this:
- On the questions, i have set the number of attempts, but when they click the redo quiz on the final slide, the answers from the 1st try are still there.
- I cannot get the "retry quiz" to disappear and "Go to course' to appear after the 2 attempts
Thanks in advance after this long winded explanation.

Hello Leandra!
Take a look at this step-by-step guide for limiting quiz attempts in Storyline. It sounds like you may be missing a few triggers, and that guide will help you achieve what you're looking to do.
Give it a try, and let me know if you'd like some help along the way!
Hi Alyssa
Thanks for the response. I did follow the link you sent me before I sent my question. I think I am doing something wrong as it didn't work. I have attached the file, would you please have a look and see where I am going wrong?
I think the problem is that you don't reset the results for each results slide before trying the quizzes again.
Hi David, I put the quiz slides to reset, but if I get the answer wrong, it says keep trying when I submit. It must be incorrect first attempt try again, incorrect second attempt continue and then goes to next question. Is this what you mean by 'I think the problem is that you don't reset the results for each results slide before trying the quizzes again.'?
Hi Leandra, apologies if I wasn't all that clear initially.
If we take the first quiz as an example to help me explain. On the Failure layer of Slide 1.5 you have buttons to Retry the Quiz and Redo the Course. Each of those options loop you back to a slide that occurs before the quiz has been taken.
In order for the quiz to be tried again, I think you need to add triggers (trigger is called Reset results) to each of these buttons that reset the results that feed in to Slide 1.5. This is a seperate action to resetting the slides individually.
Try it on the first quiz to see if it works and let me know how you get on.
Hi David
I have attached the file. Would you mind looking at it please?
I am also battling with the states on the quiz files. if I use automatically decide, when I redo the quiz, on second attempt I cant do anything. I have used the other 2 triggers and keep redoing the quiz past the 2 attempts.
I've made the tweaks I think you need but without knowing exactly what you're seeing it's difficult to know if I've interpreted your problem correctly. Check it out and let me know!
Thank, but its not quite correct. I have added red text on the results slide to show when the buttons must appear.
Also, it is allowing me to retake the quiz after 2 attempts. 2 attempts is the maximum allowed.
Thanks for all your time on this.
Okay, I've tried again. You had the number of attempts for the first two quiz questions set to two in the quizzing options, I think this is why it wasn't behaving as you'd hoped.
Try this version to see if it's any closer to what you had in mind. If it works you'll need to take a closer look at the triggers I've added and apply the same fixes to the other quizzes you have in your course.
Thank you David, it has worked and does what I want.
You are a life saver.
I'm so pleased it works!
