Quiz: changing radio button States with triggers

Mar 08, 2017

Hello, my problem is that for some reason the change of radio button states when a layers timeline starts (triggered at timeline start as layer is revealed) does not take effect. This worked well previously when not working with gradable quiz templates. Why is it not working here?

I did not find anything relative to this problem, but maybe someone knows why this is not working? Attached is the very simple one-slide example of the problem.

I am working in Storyline 360.

I wish I would have thought of this yesterday.

I was upgrading a Storyline 2 course to Storyline 360. There are two freeform "pick many" questions with multiple rows of radio buttons.

For some reason, during the conversion, all the state change triggers on the correct and incorrect layers weren't working. Moving to the submit button now works.

Here's the odd part though. Before I came across this post, I had to rebuild the first question, using the insert > input > radio buttons. The first difficulties in this were trying to copy/paste or duplicate the radio buttons that were needed. It kept trying to crash each time I tried. So I had to manually insert all 10 radio buttons. Also, I followed the same method of triggers to change states on the radio buttons, but they were all on the correct and incorrect layers. In this case, when rebuilding from scratch, triggers on the layers worked fine.

Any thoughts on why triggers on layers wouldn't work when converting from SL2 to SL360 but would work when creating from scratch? And a big time waster, why won't it let me duplicate or copy/paste any newly inserted radio buttons?

I've stripped down the original file (see attached) to only one of the quiz question types I'm talking about. This is now in SL360 though, but you should see how it was originally intended to work by looking at the triggers on the correct/incorrect layers. When previewing though, it doesn't.

As for the copy/paste or duplication of a radio button, does that work for you with no problems?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for sharing your file! I was able to duplicate a radio button without any problems, though I did experience trigger issues to change states of the radio buttons when submitting the question.

I've opened a case on your behalf with one of our support engineers to take a closer look. Be on the lookout for a response soon!

Hi Ren,

Per your comment "able to duplicate a radio button without any problems" I believe you were duplicating the originals converted from the SL2 file.

If you imagine rebuilding that slide by duplicating the whole slide, then trying to insert new radio buttons and duplicating those, that is where I ran into trouble.

I hope that helps describe the problem.

Thanks,

Ren Gomez

Hi Scott,

Thanks for the clarification, and spot on! I was duplicating the originals, though I just attempted the steps you mentioned above, and was still able to duplicate successfully.

I see that your file is currently being tested, but I'll make mention of the button duplication issue just so the support engineer can test that as well!

Hi Scott,

Thanks for sharing that! It looks like my teammate, Johnrey, was able to dig a little further into your issue and determined there were a few corrupted elements specific to your file.

I'm glad he was able to nail down the situation in which the issue occurs. Let us know if you continually run into problems with duplication!

I haven't had a chance to see if this happens again with a new file, but someone internally pointed out that this was a known problem in previous versions of SL360. I currently have version 3.37.21453 installed (corporate IS runs a bit behind versions).

In the Storyline 360 Version History, March 24, 2020 (Build 3.38.21779.0), the last bullet says:

  • Fixed: Storyline crashed when copying and pasting radio buttons and check boxes.

Thanks for your efforts.
