Quiz questions states in Storyline 2 - strange behavior
Aug 10, 2015
Hi all,
New to Storyline ( user of Captivate and Engage 09) so first of all, appreciate the wealth of knowledge in this community! It helped make my learning-curve super quick and efficient. So, thanks!
Now to the issue at hand: Working on my latest e-learning course, I have encountered strange behavior in my multiple-choice and true/false quiz questions.
Once I mark the correct answer in the form view, that button's initial state is automatically changed to "selected". Obviously, I would like for all multiple-choice radio buttons' initial state to be "normal", otherwise I kinda defy the purpose of a quiz by telling you what the answer is :-)
However, if I change the initial button state to "normal", this also takes away the "correct" mark in the form view. So my question now has no defined "correct" answer.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks again,
Maya

Attaching a short screen recording so you can see it actually happening.
After I change the button's initial state to normal and return to form view, you can see how the marking just...disappears and the question no longer has a correct answer.
Appreciate any help on this!
Thanks
Maya
Hi Maya,
That's just how you'll see it while authoring - not what the user will see in the published output. That's to help you as you're working through so that you don't have to toggle back and forth.
Hope that helps!
Hi,
Thanks for the answer! I should still be able to see what I marked as the
right answer when I author, right? Why does it change the initial status of
the button? Anyway, still think something is strange here, when I preview
the slide there is indeed no correct answer, I get the "incorrect" feedback
for both choices.
Appreciate the help!
Maya
Hi Maya,
Yes, when you're authoring if you select an answer in form view, and then look at the slide view you'll see the radio button show as selected. If you unselect that while in slide view, it'll be unselected in form view as well and therefore if previewing there will be no "correct" answer. If you have confirmed that a choice is selected as the correct answer and it's still behaving oddly we'll want to confirm that you're working on project files as described here. If the slide continues to behave oddly can you share a copy of the .story file for us to take a look at?
Hi,
Thanks for the assistance. When I opened my project today it behaved just like you described (I see the correct answer selected when authoring, but when I preview or publish, it's not).
This is the first time I encountered something in SL2 that wasn't intuitive or that I could figure out right away :-)
Thanks again, have some more questions but they are not related to this topic so will post separately later.

Hi Maya,
Just to confirm, everything is now working as expected/described in this course? When you preview/publish you're able to select the correct answer and see the feedback?
Did you check that you're working on local project files? Working on a network drive or an external (USB) drive can cause erratic behavior, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes, and loss of resources.
Hi,
I'm not working locally but saving to the network (not trusting my laptop ...), I wasn't aware that this could cause erratic behavior. That was probably the reason for the odd behavior of the quiz questions. It looks fine now.
I'll switch to working locally and saving to the network every few hours.
Thanks
Maya
Hi Maya,
If you need to back up to a network drive, you'll want to save the file locally, and then once closed copy it or transfer it to the network drive. This article on collaboration and using network drives may assist you.
Hi Ashley,
I'm experiencing this issue - and the results are being carried over to published output. I have my quiz slides setup and only changed the "selected" state of each correct quiz answer to darker blue. The hover state of the correct answer is left to the default light blue color - same as the incorrect answers on the quiz slide. However, when I preview or publish and review the output the hover state of the correct answer is the darker blue I chose ONLY for the selected state. This gives away the answer since the other hover states for the incorrect answers are the default lighter blue. What gives?
Hi Jim
can you upload your story file so folks can take a look at the setup
Sure. I've been working with it but it's still wonky.
Hi Jim
I see the behaviour you describe but I went in and added a new quiz slide to your file - and changed the selected state for two of the options and it works as expected. The hover state is light blue and the selected state changes colour when selected. See attached video.
Thanks for checking Wendy. Any clue why mine are acting weird? I'm having trouble correcting the issue without removing the correct answer. I'm sure it's probably something I did wrong.
