Quiz Retry dropping questions when Random is Checked
Dec 28, 2016
I have a Storyline 2 course with a single question bank that holds 12 questions.
If I check the "Draw questions randomly" box in the "Draw Questions from Bank" dialog, it will not present all 12 questions, even upon the first attempt, and even if I answer correctly all the questions that it does provide. This is the case whether I select "Include: All Questions" or "Include: 12 questions" in the same dialog.
If I UNCHECK the "Draw questions randomly" box, it provides all 12 questions upon both first try and all retake tries. I make no other changes to the course.
My questions:
1. Has anyone else experienced this?
2. When creating the questions in the question bank, I duplicated some of the questions, then changed the text. This saved me time on having to copy and paste individual triggers, but I wonder if there is something in the "Duplicate" function that is causing a problem with the random function.
Any help appreciated!
Best
Robert

Hi Robert,
are you testing your output locally or in the intended environment (LMS or webserver)?
Happy to take a look if you want to upload your story file - just use the grey 'add attachment' button at the bottom of the post.
Hi Wendy,
I am testing it locally, using the preview entire project function. However, I noticed the problem in SCORM Cloud.
This is for a client, and I can't publically publish the course as is, though I very much appreciate your offer!
I'll see if I can replicate
Thanks very much, I do appreciate it.
Hi Robert
here is my test file. SL2 - QB 12 questions selected randomly.
First time I had the option set to Draw 12, second time I had the option set to Draw All.
Both times it pulled all 12 questions in random order
10,5,3,1,4,6,8,11,9,2,7,12
12,6,5,9,8,1,3,10,4,7,11,2
I may not have other options set the same as you but this might help you in diagnosing the issue.
If you still have issues you may want to log a support ticket with Articulate support (upload privately) and they can take a look for you.
Good luck
I know I've used the function before without a problem.
I'll save-as and create a version I can put up.
Probably be an hour or so... I want to use the same source file. Probably be about an hour, if you're around to check later.
Thanks again.
Robert
Sure...I'm off to a funeral now but I be back on-line later today - happy to take a look for you or someone else might chime in earlier.
Either way we'll check it out ;-)

OK... made a generic copy of the original, and it still is displaying the same problems. Attached the .story file to this post.
So this is testable. This is Storyline 2.
Reminder of problems: With "randomize" box checked, course is not providing all 12 questions from question bank. Uncheck "randomize" and it shows all questions.
Thanks in advance all who check it out:

Hi Robert
there is definitely something funky going on in your file.
The first time I tested it with the pull set to 12, only 5 questions returned.
The second time I tested it with the pull set to ALL, only 3 questions returned.
I created a new file and imported the slides in and it appears to work correctly in the new file using either pull of 12 or ALL. Do you want to give that a try - otherwise someone else may be able to chime in and let you know what's happening. Depends on your timeline for completion and if you have time to play around with the 'what ifs'.
All the best and let me know how you go.
Cheers
Hi Wendy,
Thanks so much for checking it out!
When you imported the slides, did they retain all the triggers, or just the content?
I'll rework all this tomorrow morning. And best to you, for the funeral.

Hi Robert
they retained the triggers - here is the file so you can test it yourself. I did notice that you didn't have a trigger on the retry quiz button to reset your %numb% variable back to 0 - I've added that in. I also updated your quiz slide properties to 'automatically decide' on revisit so that the user can retry the question.
Hope this helps
Thanks so much, Wendy.
I'll let you know what I find. I suspect that there is corrupt code for one of the questions... possibly #6. I'll delete it and try a replacement, and solve the problem one way or another tomorrow morning.
Thanks again for all your kind help. Let me know if you have a problem you need some help/testing with, I owe you one, and I appreciate your help.
Sincerely,
Robert
No worries Robert glad to help if I can - it's bugging me now what it could be. Hope you get it sorted soon and I'll definitely take you up on your offer - cheers Wendy
Hi there Robert,
I also tested importing your RANDOM_TESTER_V01.story file into a new file, and everything worked as expected. Like you mentioned, it seems that there is something corrupt in the original file. If you'd like our Support Engineers to investigate this further, you can reach out to them directly right here. They are available 24/7 and would be happy to work with you one-on-one to pinpoint the cause of the issue.
Thanks Alyssa. I've forwarded my .story file to your Support Engineers.

Hello Robert,
Are you able to share your case number with me? I'm not finding your case through a name search.
Ah, thanks.
The site was waiting for me to prove I was human.

Wendy--what process did you use to create a new file and import the existing questions?
Thanks
Robert
Perfect - I see your case now. I'll follow along and post updates here as they're available!
Hi Robert
Follow this tutorial

Thanks! I'll try this.

OK! Wendy, your tutorial helped. And Articulate Support also helped--it turned out that I had a trigger in one of the "incorrect" dialog layers that sent the learner to the next screen. Everyone's help is appreciated. Glad to help in return.

Pesky triggers 😂😂 - glad you're all sorted Robert. Happy New Year!
