Record Screen cuts text into different slides

Nov 07, 2016

Hi all,

Weird one this, I'm screen recording Outlook 2010, adding an Appointment into the Calendar so a Step-by-Step demo.

Strangely it keeps cutting the inputted text into different slides making the Test scenario very difficult!

E.g. - From recording, I double click on an empty slot in my Calendar - all ok

I type Test in the subject field

Click Save and Close - simple!

Insert Step-by-Step and it shows -

One slide has Type "T"

Next slide has Type "est"

Both showing separate animations so I cant really join them together.

Does anyone have any ideas how to stop SL2 creating these old cut off/new slide points?

Many thanks!

Hi there Alex.  That is weird that you are getting a break between keystrokes.  I don't have Outlook 2010, so I tested using Outlook 2013, and I wasn't able to reproduce that behavior.

Does this break happen consistently if you attempt to rerecord?  It sounds like it did, but I wanted to be sure.  I wonder if Outlook is saving that calendar entry when the first letter is typed into the subject line, and it is communicating an "action" to our screen recording tool in Storyline 2.  I'm not sure how well Outlook communicates to the Windows Accessibility API, which is how Articulate Storyline collects information for screen recordings

One setting that you can investigate is if both programs, Outlook and Storyline 2, have the same permissions levels.  If Outlook is set to run as administrator, make sure that Storyline 2 is as well.

  1. Navigate to the following folder, depending on your version of Microsoft Windows:
    • 32-bit: C:\Program Files\Articulate\Articulate Storyline 2
    • 64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Articulate\Articulate Storyline 2
  2. Right-click Storyline.exe, and choose Properties.
  3. Select the Compatibility tab.
  4. If the box is marked to Run this program as an administrator, make sure the same box is marked for the application you're recording. If it's unchecked, make sure it's also unchecked for the application you're recording.  You might want to reboot your computer for those changes to take effect.

Would you be willing to work with our support team to see if there is a way around this?  One of our engineers might be able to test in the same environment that you have to see if we can isolate what's going on.

Hi Crystal,

Many thanks for your reply!

I've just retested it to be sure and now its working correctly!

You could well be right, it was Outlook working in the background to save the Calendar, maybe it was a lag on our system at the time in delaying the changes being submitted back to our Exchange server?

If it happens again, I'll try the settings you recommended and I'd very more than happy to work with the support teams to figure it out!

Thanks again
