Recording audio on slide only or layers? Best practice?

Aug 12, 2014

Hello,

Before I get into recording all the audio for my course, I am wondering if it is better to have one audio file on the base layer, or record a clip for each layer of the slide? Some slides have several layers that I want to automatically appear at certain points, but each layer also has several animations that will need to sync with the audio.

So, would it be better to remove my layers and make them into separate slides, and have some slides automatically advance?

It would be nice if the course could be mobile friendly, but not required. Is there any other information I can provide that would help?

Thanks for your help!

HI Lesley,

Really, in terms of having audio on separate layers or separate slides, I think it's a matter of personal preference.

If you have it all on slide, you'll want to have separate clips on each layer. And depending on how things are set up, you may need to play with the slide and layer properties (you can find information here) , for example pausing the timeline of the base layer.

Have you visited some of the tutorials to learn a bit more about how layers and triggers work? One quick way to access the tutorials: if you're online when Storyline is running, click the Question Mark button in the program Title Bar on the very right of the screen.

This will bring you to the tutorials page, where you can see a table of contents that you can expand to locate a topic that interests you.

Perhaps others will jump in with more information or their best practies, but I thought I'd get the conversation started
