Replace Existing Custom Template
Sep 17, 2014
I found the discussion on creating an articulate storyline template and where to save it for use in other projects.
I have an existing template that I changed. When I save the template, I replaced the old one in the templates folder.
Now in the template selection screen, I have both templates. How do I get rid of the old one and how do I keep this from happening when I change another of my templates?
I am attaching a view of the template selection window. Roadmapexit is the old template and Roadmapexit (2) is the new one.

Hi Jeffrey,
If you use your Windows Explorer to delete them from your folder called /My Articulate Projects/Storyline Templates, they should also disappear from the dropdown list that you see when you go to Insert>New Slide> Templates. If that's not the case, perhaps try closing Storyline, then re-open it after deleting the files, and you should be set.
Hope that helps!
Ashley,
Thanks for the reply. Maybe I should have deleted the old file first. I just saved the file in Articulate to the folder /My Articulate Projects/Storyline Templates and when the system prompted to replace the file I clicked the OK button.
After I saw the duplicate template listed, I used Windows Explorer to look in the templates folder to be sure there was only one file. Sure enough there was only the new file. I saw the old file in the template select window. I then closed Articulate and rebooted my laptop. Unfortunately, both templates still appear in the selection window but I only have one file in the folder.
What I have not done yet is clear my cache although I have my browsers set to do that when they close. I will try that anyway just in case. The issue though seems to be that Articulate is keeping the old file in memory.
Hi Jeffrey,
Hm, I'd read that method worked a few times for other users - so I wonder if you're correct that duplicated it or saving it as another version is causing part of the issue you've run into.
Have you tried restarting Storyline and your computer entirely?
Found out what I did wrong. I had forgotten that the originals should be stored in \MyArticulate\Storyline Templates and that our IT department puts that folder in a specific place. I was just putting it in my working folder not the one Articulate accesses when I insert slides.
Now that I have the file in the correct place, it works fine.
Happy to hear it Jeffrey and thanks for the update!
This was VERY helpful! Thank you!
Glad to hear it Ivy - that's why we keep old threads around in case folks need assistance.
