Resume box appears throughout course but not in assessment test

Jul 22, 2015

Hi, I've read some threads with users experiencing issues with bookmarking/resume feature but none I've read quite mirror the strange behaviour we're encountering.

I've built what I can consider to a standard type course, which has 6/7 chapters of content and once all chapters have been completed an end assessment test is then active ready for them to complete.

The course works perfectly in our LMS Cornerstone, bookmarks as expected, the test scores correctly however we need to share it with a supplier to host on their LMS and this it behaves differently.

Their testing has proven the bookmarking works fine throughout the course. If they exit the course they get resume prompt and can continue, as expected.

The issue they've come across is that if they complete the test and fail it. If they then exit the course, when they relaunch the course the resume prompt does not appear at all and they start on the home menu page (with none of the chapters showing as completed).

I've tested the file in SCORM cloud and the resume prompt appears correctly, but then throws in a curve ball and after selecting Yes, takes me not to the failed test page but a page in one of the chapters?!

Out of the two issues I'm more concerned with trying to explain and fix why the resume prompt doesn't appear only on the test chapter, which I cannot replicate in Cornerstone or SCORM cloud.

Has anyone come across this scenario?

Hi, Barry -- Sorry to hear you are experiencing these issues. You mentioned that you are not seeing this issue in the SCORM Cloud, as it is the industry standard for LMS testing, so you may want to take a look at the following:

How to Troubleshoot Your LMS with SCORM Cloud

Troubleshooting LMS Issues

Additionally, you are also welcome to run through these troubleshooting steps, as well. Please make sure you are working locally as described here, and you may want to try importing the file into a new file. If you are still having issues, you might want to try to repair Storyline. Also, could you please ensure that you are utilizing the most recent SL2 Update? Info on Update 5 can be found here.

Please let us know if issues persist, and it might be a good idea to reach out to the LMS on which the issues are occurring, as well.

Hi Christie, thanks for your reply.

I've made progress with my investigations and establish it's to do with the suspend data limit which has been exceeded.

I republished as SCORM 2004 and it works great in SCORM cloud, however in the suppliers bespoke LMS for some unknown reason the resume button no longer appears ( but worked in SCORM 1.2). I've asked them to investigate but so far they cannot explain why this happens.

As the course contained a test I've split it into a separate topic and test, however frustratingly the reduced file still exceeds the file limit as SCORM 1.2. The course is only 65 pages and I've looked at trying to reduce (unsuccessfully) the suspend date limit.

I'll try importing into a new file and see if that works.

FYI - This is a Storyline 1 update 8 output. I now have Storyline 2 but have resisted converting it as I've read on other forums Storyline 2 suspend data limit is higher.

Any quick tips on how I reduce the suspend data limit?

Hi, Barry -- Thanks for the update. I think at this point, it may be of value to have our Support Engineers take a closer look at your file. If you would like, I would be happy to submit/create a ticket for you, and someone from the Support Staff will be in touch, or you are welcome to contact those folks directly using this form

Thanks Christie, I've just carried out more testing and still have same suspend data issue.

I've built a similiar looking 2nd course using my original as a version to clone which behaves in the same way, so I'm hoping that if the support engineers spot an obvious issue which I've overlooked/I'm not aware of the implications of designing the courses in a certain way then this will solve both for me.

I've submitted a ticket under reference 00620604. Fingers crossed!

Hi, Barry -- It looks like John from our Support Staff is handling your case, and reached out via email with some suggestions. For anyone who may be experiencing a similar issue and comes across this thread, here are some of John's ideas on what may be happening:

If the course resumes properly on SCORM Cloud but not on your LMS, then I can think of the following possible reasons why this would occur:

1) It might be a caching issue.

Try to republish your course using a different course title and then reupload it to your LMS. If the course with the new title works then you might have been having a caching issue and old content is showing when you access the original course. Try to clear your browser cache.

2) SCORM 2004 might not be supported by the LMS.

If you published the course with a different title and the issue still occurs, then you may need to consult your LMS if they have full support for SCORM 2004.

3) LMS system requirements may not have been met.

Check with your LMS if they have any system requirements to be able to properly view a course. These are possibly a specific version of Java, Flash Player or a specific browser that needs to be used to view the LMS courses.

Hope that helps, Barry! :)

Hi Christie

We've tried to explore options suggested by John.

1) Republishing the file using a different course name did not work.

2) SCORM 2004 is an issue with the suppliers LMS. We've carried out testing in SCORM cloud, Cornerstone & Success Factors and all display the resume box as expected. This would indicate the issue is with their LMS. I've fed this back to their developers to investigate.

In the meantime we've done some further testing and made changes to the course. We've removed page variables for all the chapters (excluding the end assessment test) and have changed the slide properties for all slides to 'reset to initial state'. These have solved the suspend data issue and we can publish into SCORM 1.2. The new files have been tested in SCORM cloud and the suppliers LMS and both work correctly.

Not sure whether only one of these steps needed doing, but I'm just pleased the combination of these changes has solved the suspend data issue. When I have more time I plan to revisit the course and try these steps separately so I can see how they influence the suspend data.
