Retain a state when closing then returning to an eLearning.

Hi, all. Hoping to get your help. I want to indicate the progress of a user as they go through an eLearning created in Storyline 2. I can either use a variable to change the state (i.e. visited) or use the default states. This is not the issue. The issue is how can I ensure that regardless of where the user is when closing the learning, their progress indicator is always indicated when they return to the learning. If I retain the ability for my LMS to prompt the user to continue from where they left off (yes or no), if they select yes, prior states are saved...yet, if they select no they return to the start and everything is set back to its initial state. I want to avoid the latter and always allow for the user to know where they left off (and what they completed) when they return to the learning. I am not sure what I am missing to make this possible (and I hope I'm explaining it accurately). Thank you!
