Review Mode

Hello,

I can't seem to find this exact issue anywhere else but I have been spinning in circles trying to fix it.

We are using Storyline to create modules in a Moodle LMS. I publish them as SCORM packages as they are required to reach a score of 80% to pass. However, after opening the module and looking at a few slides, and then closing, when I reopen the module, it automatically forces the module into review mode. Even though the module wasn't marked as complete (I don't think).

I messed with the settings on moodle and the settings in storyline but I still cannot seem to get it to work. Our modules are pretty long so I don't think forcing a new attempt is fair to our users.  I tried auto-continue but that still puts it in review mode..

We have many users that will complete the module while in 'Review Mode' so then their scores are not recorded.

I'm not sure if I have a setting wrong that is causing Moodle to think the module is completed. Or if something else is wrong.

Sounds like a potential issue with 'masteryscore' - check the Moodle SCORM Faq for details. We just added a new setting in moodle 3.1 (not released yet) that helps you disable the masteryscore functionality but there are other suggestions in the moodle faq and moodle scorm forum.

    Dan Marsden you are correct.

Within Moodle 2.8 we were having the same issue with our Storyline 2 courses.

By deleting the Masteryscore line from the course output manifest file, creating a new zip, when uploaded to Moodle, no more review mode when failing to achieve the pass mark :)

Thanks, Marcus, for popping in to confirm Dan's idea!  Always good to add to the knowledge hive for folks who stumble across these discussions.  :)

      Hello Marcus,

We are facing the same issue, but for us is very risky to lose any student advances  (subsided online course subvention)...When uploaded the scorm after removing that line you lost student itenary or any already tracked results?

      Thanks!

  • Hi, Jessi -- Thanks so much for reaching out with your question! While I cannot speak on using Moodle firsthand, I thought I'd add that it may be helpful for you to share your file here so that others in the community who use Moodle are able to chime in and take a closer look.

I also thought I should note, as stated over here in this thread by our Director of Technical Support, Justin Grenier...

"Most learning management systems (LMSs) consider a course to be in review mode when attempting it again after the completion requirement has been met, and Storyline supports this consideration by default.  If you'd like to change this default behavior, it's best to change it in the LMS.

The best way for you determine if this is a problem with your Storyline content or with your LMS is to test your course in SCORM Cloud, which is an industry-standard tool for testing SCORM output.  If the problem is reproducible in SCORM Cloud, we want to know more about it so that we can take a deeper look at the problem."

Hi Articulate, has your team given any consideration to giving developers the option to turn off the default Review mode (i.e. Read only) on on repeat entry when publishing from Storyline? (without having to change Javascript, which is beyond my depth of knowledge).

Rise 360 SCORM's behave the way we want them to (i.e. Learner can go back into SCORM and retake Rise quiz to improve their score); however, Storyline SCORM's appear to consistently cause re-entry issues because of default to Review Mode.

I know it is originating from the Storyline side (i.e. not our LMS), because the behaviour is consistent in SCORM Cloud (i.e. When I enter the SCORM a second time in and improve my quiz score, the new grade is not recorded).

The only solution identified on our LMS side (Moodle) is to force a new attempt, which is not helpful as we do not want to force our learners to redo the entire course. We just want them to be able to retry the final quiz within the SCORM again to improve their grade (which they can easily do if it is Rise).

Is there any other non-javascript solution you are aware of that would allow us to disable the Review Mode default for Storyline SCORMs?

  • Hi, Meghan.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts on how you'd like the SCORM from Storyline to work with Review Mode.

I've submitted your suggestions to our team, and we'll come back to update this discussion if we have any news to share. Here's how we manage feature requests.

In the meantime, editing the scormdriver.js file in the published output, as described in this article, should achieve what you're looking to do. It can be done using Notepad, and I'm happy to provide you with additional information if you'd like to try.

  • Hi there, I've been running into this issue as well actually. We use Moodle as our LMS and I have been using Storyline with basic activity completion settings. However recently I published a SCORM which required a quiz to be "Passed".

This works in the way that if a student passes the quiz, it gets reported as complete. If the quiz isn't passed, it gets reported as failed and this gets reported to the SCORM. However, this kicks in the "Review Mode". So the student cannot repeat the quiz and their SCORM is still marked as incomplete.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? I absolutely do not want learners to start their attempt again thus wiping the SCORM progress.

      Hello National Express iLearn,

      Happy to help!

We recommend testing how your course behaves in a different LMS, just to see if the behavior you're experiencing is LMS specific. SCORM Cloud is the best tool for this. Here's how to test your course in SCORM Cloud

If you aren't able to replicate the behavior in SCORM Cloud, there's a chance that the behavior might be due to a setting or configuration in your LMS, in which case you'll need to work with your LMS administrator to fix the behavior.

Additionally, you can also try following the article that my colleague Maria shared which explains how you can edit the published output of your course to change the 'Review Mode' behavior.

If you have additional questions or clarifications, feel free to open a case with our support team here and we'll be glad to help!
