Review Results Interaction - Previous and Next Buttons

Oct 28, 2014

Is there any way to edit the Review Results interaction in Storyline? I created my own Submit button for the quiz slides which means I removed the preprogrammed submit buttom from the slide player. However, when I go to review my results the Previous and Next buttons are not on the slides to click through the questions. The only way to move from question to question is by clicking submit. It seems like if I create my own submit button I can't use the preprogrammed Previous and Next buttons when they go to review their results. Is there any way to add my own Previous and Next buttons when they review the results if that is the case?

Hi Diana,

They should be included automatically as that is the default behavior as detailed here. Although it seems our team is aware of an issue where if you change the player features for slides from "player defaults" to "custom for this selected slide" than the next/prev buttons do not reappear. Is that the same set up as you have? If not, could you share a copy of your .story file here with us?

They are included automatically if I do not remove the Submit button from the slide. If I remove the submit button, the previous and next buttons do not show up at all anymore. I can't share my file, but here are some screenshots to show how I set it up.

Hi Diana,

From your images it looks like you're using SL1, so I set up a very basic quiz with a custom submit button and the prev/next buttons do automatically appear for me. Can you check out the example here and let me know how it behaves for you? If you don't see the next/prev buttons - what update of Storyline 1 are you using? If you don't see them, the next step would be to ensure you're working locally and then please follow the steps here to repair Storyline.

Hi Ashley,

I looked at your file and you're right, you do have the previous and next buttons. However, I believe that is only because you have the volume icon on the bottom of the screen. When I remove the volume icon from the player I no longer have the Previous and Next buttons when I review the quiz. Please see the screenshot attached. I think some function has to be on the bottom of the screen in order for the Prev and Next buttons to reappear during the review. Are you also seeing this?

Hi Diana,

Thanks for clarifying a bit more about your set up. Yes, this is the case - and that's actually been a workaround for users who didn't want the previous/next buttons to appear as a part of the quiz review.

Since your set up is somewhere in the middle, I modified my file to include my own next button on the review layer - and to get the layer to appear you'll first need to add something within the "feedback and branching" section while editing the quiz. You can remove it once the layer is created. Also, you can choose to hide the submit button use the "eye" icon from within the timeline of the base layer objects.

Hope that helps!

Hi Ashley,

I have another wrinkle to add to this. I'm developing a quiz that I want to behave in the exact same way as the sample you've provided -- no PREV or NEXT buttons during quiz review -- however I can't seem to get it to work. The main difference between my quiz and yours is that mine is drawing random questions from a question pool. Outside of that, everything appears to be pretty much the same, including my use of a Review layer to display my custom buttons.

I've done everything I can think of, including making sure that no other controls appear in the bottom toolbar, but the Prev and Next buttons are still showing up during quiz review. Any ideas?

Hi Steve,

Sorry - it looks like the second part of my post didn't come through.

Yes, my file still works in Storyline 2, but you had mentioned using a question bank as well? I hadn't tried the set up that way, so it seems like maybe that is overriding other elements? If you have a sample set up, can you share that here so that we can take a look at what you got started?  It's supposed to show the next/prev buttons as I mentioned - so my method is a bit of a workaround.

Ashley, in the process of cleaning up the project I started with, I seem to have resolved this issue. I can now publish my quiz without the PREV and NEXT buttons showing up during quiz review.

In case it helps anyone else, these are the tasks I completed during the clean-up. Unfortunately, I didn't preview the quiz until after all of them were finished, so I'm not sure which one did the trick.

  • Eliminated one of the two question banks that were in the project
  • Reduced the number of questions in the remaining question bank from 20 to 4
  • In the Edit view for each of the four questions, modified the Review layer properties to match the attached screenshot
  • Made sure the slide properties for the question slides match the attached screenshot

The end result looks perfect!
