Reviewing results stops at next scene

Feb 14, 2014

Hey everybody,

This is my first post here on the forums. Our company has been using Storyline for about 2 months now and we absolutely love it. I've just finished a new course that we want to start using in the upcoming month. It is a course which the student should review him or herself. During the course we have used slides with theory and slides with questions. I've all slides submit the interaction (I.E. Multiple choice) to the result slide and they all get recorded. I get to see the result score at the end of the course. The course is divided in to multiple scenes.

The problem I run in to is when I am reviewing the quiz. I see the answers of first couple of questions in the first scene. At the last question in that scene, when I try to click next to the next question in a new scene nothing happens. I've added a back and next button in the slides itself so I can still continue reviewing the quiz but this means that the students have to go through the theory slides again.

If I go through the course this way and I come up to a question in the next scene I do get to see the result of that question. If there is another question in that particular scene the prev and next button work again to review the questions in that particular scene.

I've tried adding a result slide to all scenes individually and link these to a result slide in the end but with no luck. I hope somebody can help me out!

Thanks

Hi Shane,

Welcome to the community!

You're right. I wonder if this is a bug or if you and I are missing something? I'll report it if we hear back from Articulate.

I worked around it. Not sure if this was the easiest workaround, and am open to others, but in the interim, here' what the attached is about ad what I did.

Very barebones. 2 Scenes.

Scene 1 has 3 slides: a "content" slide, a quiz slide, and a "skipped" slide (more on this in a bit.

Scene 2 has 3 slides: "content", quiz, and results.

I created a variable called visited, default is false.

Slide 1.2 Quiz Slide in Scene 1

The Continue buttons incorrect and correct layers for the quiz slide in scene 1 are set as follows

Jump to the skipped slide when the user clicks Continue IF Visited is equal to true

Jump to the  first slide in Scene 2 (2.1) when the user clicks continue IF Visited is equal to False

Slide 1.3 Skipped Slide in Scene 1

The skipped slide (the last slide in Scene 1)  is set to jump to slide 2.1 when the timeline starts.

Results Slide

I added a trigger to the Review button on the Results slide that sets the Visted Variable = Truen when the user clicks

You can hide the skipped slide from the menu so Learners won't see it. I've left it there for now.

Please shout out with any questions, and let's see what others have to say.

Hi Shane and welcome to Heroes!

It sounds like an issue I've previously seen reported to our QA team, but if I remember correctly it was in relation to quiz questions in a question bank. As Becky mentioned, the work around is to add an additional slide at the end of the scene which the quiz questions can jump to before moving out of the scene and is "skipped" over.

If you'd like us to take a look at your course and confirm it's the same issue, please feel free to share it here with us, or if you'd prefer to share privately I can send you directions on how to send it to me directly or you can always share with our Support engineers.

Hey guys,

I've been postponing adding this solution into my course for about a week and I've been working on the course itself in the meantime. The time has come to really fix this problem. The solution makes perfect sense to me but I'm running in to another problem. On the slides I've been adding my own previous and next buttons and I've disabled the slide navigation controls. While reviewing the quiz these automatically are enabled.

Is there a way to disable these so I can keep working with my own previous and next buttons which are placed in the slide rather then with the navigation controls? I can't seem to find this option so far.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Shane Hille

Regarding my last post, I figures this out by disabling all buttons throughout the course including the volume button which was still left on for no reason.

I'm getting closer and closer to the solution but I'm running in to another problem. Just to give you a quick update:

I've added a visited variable to the last questions of a scene which are set to false. If turned to false they will continue to the next slide (content slide) when going through the course. They are turned to true when reviewing the quiz. If turned to true it will go directly to the next question slide.

This all works fine untill I have the following situation [content slides] => [question] => [content slides] => [question]

For some reason after the first question it skips to the content slides afterwards even if the variable is set to true and the trigger to directly go to the next question slide is put on.

Again, any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Shane,

In regards to your first question, by default in a review the prev/next buttons will appear as Storyline is assuming you'll need a way to navigate the course without the "Submit" button. The workaround, that you figured out, is to remove all other buttons, seekbar, etc. so that the prev/next buttons don't have a place to display.

For your set up with the content slides, it's hard to say without seeing it - but do you have your trigger set to "go to next slide" or "go to slide X" which is a question slide? You may want to review this screenr by a community member who describes how to set this up.
