I use custom variables in a course, I can save then and when I continue the course I can recover then.
But, I'll try to explain it, for example, I change the value of one variable in a timeline action, if I close the course without another action, this last change of value doesn't change.
If you change a variable on a slide to save that to the resume data you need to jump to another slide this is the point where it is saved to the resume data.
