Saving all data in tests

Jul 05, 2012

Good morning, I was wondering if it was at all possible to have an option to automatically save all the choices a user has selected in a test if they accidentally closed the storyline module?

That way, if they come back to the program, it'll all ready have it where they left off, every time unless they click an option "New Test."

I know Storyline allows you to resume once if its closed, but I need something a little more robust like a save button on a Microsoft Office product like Word, Excel, etc.

Is this something Storyline could do?

Thanks for your help!

I too am very interested in knowing whether or not Storyline can save variable information to a file.  This would allow the information to be used in another system, perhaps incorporated into Storyline as a web object, such as an expert system.  Phil's answer, while helpful and promising, fell short of providing an unambiguous solution.  Does anyone else know how variable data can be saved so that it can be used by either Storyline or another program?  That would greatly enhance the scope of problems for which Storyline could be a major part of the solution.

John the variables data is saved and you can choose force resume, you could use javascript to save to a database or textfile which could then be used by another programme, at the moment this is not a universal solution across all platforms and is browser security dependent.

I guess the simple answer is not at the moment

Phil, many thanks for your reply.  I am so delighted that Storyline has incorporated variables and javascript because, even though I am not a professional programmer, I can work with javascript reasonably well.  By the way, I ran a test expert system in a web object last night and it worked like a charm.  If I only had more time from my day job.

Also, do you have any plans to get the Storyline for Starters book into a Canadian bookstore, like Amazon.ca or another.  I know I can get it from Georgia but it is a bit of a pain with brokerage at the border (let alone delivery costs) and so I am looking to get it the easy way.

Phil, another question:  the program I wish to transfer data to uses standard XPath commands to select item(s) of data in an XML file.  Can javascript in Storyline be used to write XML data files?  If so, I will have to learn how to do this but I will burn that bridge when i come to it.  Many thanks!
